Therapy Session Take #1

WHO: Mari and you (OTA, characters are free to interact with others as well)
WHAT: Mari is hosting a therapy session! Come if you would like, or if you want to argue against it feel free to show up as well! This is more informal than it seems although she did invite some guest speakers.
WHERE: One of the large buildings that was most likely a common area for everyone, or just a super large bedroom.
WHEN: After First Crossing

A message goes out on the server from Mari: Sorry for the delay everyone! I thought it best to wait a bit till after the meeting Kel thoughtfully put together for all of us! If you would like to come for the Therapy Session, please come to building X. If you would like to bring anyone or anything along please do! Special guest speakers/appearances include Makoto Naegi, Daniil Dankovsky, and Soo Won.

Mari put her tablet down and went back to straightening the chairs she was able to gather in a circle. Surely this would be welcoming? This way they could all see each other and seek comfort if needed... but just in case, she had set up private areas using curtains as a makeshift divider in case others felt the need for a one on one talk...

It still felt strange to her to not have refreshments so she had cups filled with water just in case, surely even if they didn't need to drink it still helped to make the session feel welcoming?

As people filtered in she would call out a greeting. "Welcome and thank you for coming! If you feel comfortable taking a seat please do so! There are also refreshments over there."

He drops his smile at this, and furrows his brow instead.

"I have told you that I have a bachelor's degree. This is more than sufficient for my line of work."

His voice wavers. He is very defensive about this is particular. It's genuinely not his fault that he was robbed of the chance to get his doctorate in a country where he couldn't leave and where there was no chance of entering a masters program for medicine.

Oh. Nagito had assumed Dankovsky's bachelor's degree to be only a difference of timeline, but it seems like the lack of further degrees means something more to Dankovsky than that. Nagito leans in a little. "But surely it's not fair to call yourself a doctor in that case. If you had talent, then that would be a different matter, of course, but you're an average person."

"How dare you." Daniil spats. "I will not have you mocking me. I am a practicing doctor. It is not possible where I'm from to have a masters in medicine for anyone. If you are so smart, I suppose you have heard of something called the soviet union, yes? I am a celebrity doctor. A celebrity. I have brought dead tissue back to life. I have done more with my life than you have ever done!"

In a fit of absolute rage Dankovsky kicks over an unoccupied chair. I am so sorry Mari. He just cannot stand Nagito undermining all of his accomplishments. This man who has never gone to medical school ever has the gal to tell him that he isn't even a doctor. He doesn't know his life at all.

Komaeda-kun!

[Makoto marches up to the bickering duo and quickly separates the two, grabbing Nagito's arm and positioning himself in front of him. He turns to look at Nagito with a disapproving glare as he scolds him.]

You shouldn't say such things to people! You need to apologize to Dankovsky-san for those words!

[Once he's sure Nagito understands that he's disappointed in him, he turns to Daniil and softens his expression and bows lowly at him in apology.]

Dankovsky-san I'm so sorry for Komaeda-kun's words. Please don't take it to heart, he just feels strongly about talent due to our time back home. Please find it in your heart to forgive him, even a little.

Ah--! [Nagito gets pulled like a doll, unresisting, and immediately wilts under Makoto's disapproving glare. Makoto might as well have slapped him, except anyone who's familiar with how Nagito processes pain would know he'd handle that much more calmly.] But Naegi-sama, nothing I said was incorrect!

[He doesn't sound like he's arguing anymore so much as he's whining about getting in trouble, though.]

"As I have said, what you have asserted is incorrect. I am a practicing doctor, and I will be respected as such."

He then turns to Makoto, ignoring Nagito entirely.

"I will be happy accept Mr. Komaeda's apology when he actually apologies though I will have you know that I need not prove my so called 'talent' as a doctor to either of you." He says, voice and shoulders shaking in rage as he does so. Not necessarily at Makoto himself, just at the situation, "You only have one doctor in this forsaken place and while I will treat you regardless of my personal feelings it is still in your best interest to treat me with respect and decency!"

[Makoto sends a warning glare at Nagito from his position but nods at Daniil's words, bowing lower.]

I understand. I apologize, Dankovsky-san. I'll have a talk with Komaeda-kun.

[With that, he rights himself up and walks towards Nagito and silently grabs his arm and starts dragging him away.]

[Ah, Makoto is still upset with him, this is terrible... Nagito just meekly allows himself to be dragged away, which may look silly when he has eight inches on Makoto. He isn't about to offer an apology to Dankovsky, but he's stopped antagonizing him.]

Do they have a closer relationship that Dankovsky doesn't know about...? Not that it's really any of his business, he supposes, he just hadn't pictured them getting along.

Nevertheless, he turns to leave the middle of the circle of chairs to sulk off to the side somewhere for the rest of the meeting. The whole event has absolutely soured his mood. He's used to being dragged through the mud to various degrees, being told that his life work is meaningless, and other such things, but this? Was on a different level entirely.

[Makoto drags Nagito to a abandoned corner and looks at him sternly for a moment.]

Stay here. I'll be right back.

[Turning around and going back to get a chair, he comes back and plops the chair behind Nagito.]

Please sit.

[Nagito stays where he's put, still except for just a little anxious fidgeting with his hair. He sits obediently as soon as he's told to.]

I, um, I didn't mean to upset you. [This is maybe not who he should be apologizing to.]

[Makoto's frown only deepens as he crosses hears Nagito's words before he sighs. Crossing his arms, he looks down at Nagito.]

I know. But I'm not the one you should be apologizing to.

[Sighing again, he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath before staring down at Nagito.]

Why did you say those things, Komaeda-kun?

I wasn't going to just let him tell everyone about hysteria and Freud. [It was all outdated!] It wasn't as if I was lying. Nothing I said was incorrect!

[He said that once already, but he repeats it because that sort of thing is one way of how he judges what he should and shouldn't say. ...Though, in the interest of making Makoto maybe less upset:] But I suppose it's probably not his fault he doesn't have a doctorate.

[There. He acknowledged the part that he said mostly just to get under Dankovsky's skin. That's what he's supposed to do, right?]

[Makoto sighs at Nagito's response, disappointed but not surprised. While he would agree that taking notes from Freud and the idea of hysteria wasn't good but did he have to say it like that? Shaking his head slightly as he listened, he looked at Nagito again when he acknowledged some of his mistake.]

That's certainly one thing, yes. But what have we talked about talent not determining someone's worth? Hasn't that kind of thinking caused enough tragedy back home?

[Mari remained sitting, the picture of perfect composure despite what was going down. She was smiling even, but her eyes clearly read "don't mess up my therapy session".]

I invited the good doctor here so that he could educate us. Although it seems you have some rather strong viewpoints on this. Would you like to 'educate' us as well?

[Once again Nagito has that urge to stand up straight. He's immediately all smiles and self-deprecation.] I-I don't mean to interrupt things. [He absolutely meant to interrupt things.] It's simply important to know the modern day facts! But as I said, having me do a presentation would be entirely unproductive. I wasn't lying about that!

[Uh oh... it seemed like she'd made things rather awkward now...]

A-ah no! It's ok...

[Hmm.. really how did one begin to apologize for being too serious in this situation?

You do bring up a good point. Not all of us are from the same time periods and places so we all have varying knowledge about things...

[Was her face warm? It certainly felt it to her.]

W-what about where you came from?

Well--there was a former Super High School Level Therapist, but she got murdered a few months ago. [Nagito is only making this more awkward.]

M-murdered?!

[The startled exclamation left her mouth before she could stop it.]

I-is that normal?

[Makoto, Nagito, and now this unknown woman... all of them were dead... just what did their world contain exactly?]

Not as much as a couple of years ago! [Nagito says this cheerfully--see, things are improving!]

'A-a couple of years ago'?

[She repeated, still a bit in shock. And Nagito seemed so... cheerful about it? Or maybe just used to it?]

T-they aren't around here by chance?

[She hadn't seen anyone else a bit after their arrival but if a third person from their world perished...]

Naegi-sama is the only person here I know from my world. If there was a therapist here, I'd definitely have let you know! [That's obviously what Mari's concern is, right? That Nagito was hiding someone qualified to lead a therapy session?]

[Despite what Nagito thought that wasn't her main reason for asking but thanks for caring!]

Ah... ok then...

[So it wasn't like with her, Sunny, and Kel... maybe that person had either come here already before they arrived... or might even come after they were gone... She wasn't sure she liked that thought.]

Regardless... I'm sorry! I didn't... I mean...

[Why was apologizing so hard sometimes? If anything... the session didn't have to go a certain way and she shouldn't have tried to take it out on Nagito. As long as it was able to help those here, that's all that mattered.]

Eh? [Nagito tilts his head; it takes him a moment to even register she's trying to apologize to him, he's so unused to that sort of thing.] Oh, no, you don't need to apologize to someone as worthless as me!

No I do need to apologize... I shouldn't have snapped at you like that...

[Her mouth turns into a frown as she continues looking at him.]

And you aren't worthless. You opinions matter just as much as any of ours.
