TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

Nagito looks up at the tower of broken electronics. It's impressive, really. "You've been working hard! But I don't think any of us have found any working generators or batteries or anything like that, unfortunately."

Nagito remembers the discussion on the network about batteries. He wonders how many humans it would take to power this sort of thing. It's probably best not to wonder that out loud.

"And we'll be leaving this place soon, you know."

He's actually not sure if she knows. Lain definitely arrived after the latest discussion about Crossing, after all; he'd have noticed her before now otherwise.

"Oh."

She looks down at the ground as she says this. After she had worked so hard... maybe she should have asked someone.

"Where are we going?"

Maybe she can start over there. Well, no matter where she ends up, Lain thinks she'll end up doing something like this, probably. It's more like a habit than anything now that she can't actively access the wired anymore.

This girl may be around Yashiro and Hanako's ages, but she's very different. Quiet. Maybe she'd get along with Sunny.

"Ah, we're not sure yet," Nagito says, his smile tilting toward apologetic. He pulls out his network device, shaped like a modern smart phone, to show her the message they got. "Before this, we were in some caverns, but it just says elsewhere, see?"

Okay, 'elsewhere' is scrambled, but it's legible.

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
She takes out a red device, shaped similar to a smart phone but it has a pad to write on it with a pen sort of like a tablet to the side. Very quickly she is able to pull up the same post and compares it side to side with Nagito's device.

"Ah, found it." Lain says. "This network... it's kind of like the Wired."

Not the same. But similar. Lain had found it too limited so she hadn't explored it much yet. Seems like that was a mistake.

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Wired?" Nagito echoes; he's not familiar with that term. But if he had to guess... "Is that anything like the internet? If you have that where you're from, I mean."
beos: (pic#17772885)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do you mean the internet protocol six?" Lain asks.

She'll leave out the fact that her world is on seven now. Or was before she erased it. That's not important or relevant, not at all.

"The Wired runs off of IPv6."

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-02 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah--well, I'm not that familiar with things besides just using it, you know?" Nagito looks embarrassed. "But I've heard that term before. Where I'm from, we don't call it the Wired. Just the internet, usually. But that seems like a pretty small difference, all things considered!"

It's easier than trying to discuss this stuff with those of them who don't even know what a television is.

"The network we use is a little like that, except pretty stripped down. But on the other hand, some of the others can access it with paper notebooks, so maybe I'm underestimating it."
beos: (pic#17772893)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
She just nods. Makes sense. Certainly nothing to be embarrassed about in her mind.

Though the idea of being able to access the Network from just a regular book is interesting to her. Lain makes a mental note to try with someone that has one.

She takes another look at Nagito's cellphone, side by side next to her handheld Navi. It's different than hers. Smaller. Lain's fascinated at seeing the side by side differences in their technologies.

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Nagito watches her comparing the devices. "Does yours look like something you'd use back home? Mine looks like a cell phone from my world."

And a lot of the people from worlds with less technology have notebooks. Though Sunny does too--but he was talking about landline telephones on the network, wasn't he? He might be from before cell phones too, then.
beos: (pic#17772890)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Mine's a personal Navi, or HandiNavi." She explains.

The term cellphone is unfamiliar to her, but it's easy enough to gather the meaning. Maybe it has something to do with biology? She looks at the device that's a tad bit smaller than hers with even more curiosity now.

"Can I see it?" Lain asks.
blindluck: (035)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Nagito hands it over. "Don't post anything weird with my name, okay?"

He's just kidding, of course. Nagito's device has a backlight and touchscreen keyboard. The screen rotates to widescreen when tilted on its side.

"I guess the full name for it would be cellular telephone, or mobile telephone. Usually there are more applications, internet access, email... And, uh, a real cell phone would be able to make phone calls, of course."
beos: (pic#17772891)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
She spends a few minutes figuring out the functions of it from a software point of view. Lain does type something, but she doesn't send a message to anyone, and does do it in full view of Nagito. It's more that she just wants to see how it types, not that she actually wants to send any messages as him.

Then, abruptly, she spins the device around, and removes the back plate to reveal the battery.

It seems like she wants to take it apart even more, but since it's not her property, she doesn't. She instead nods, puts it back together, and carefully hands the cellphone back to Nagito instead.

"Thank you."
blindluck: (035)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Nagito watches. If she just steals his battery--well, that kind of boldness could be admirable from a certain point of view. But then she's putting it back together, and Nagito takes it back. But this particular way of looking at something, of pulling it apart and putting it back together, the focus--it reminds him of talent. Like Souda working with his machines, maybe. Would Makoto recognize Fujisaki in her?

"You really like computers, huh?"
beos: (pic#17772894)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Like? Did Lain like computers? Sometimes she hated them. Sometimes she loved them. Sometimes she felt like the Wired was all she had. Like and Dislike felt like incredibly simple words to describe her feelings.

She couldn't like or dislike something that was at least partly responsible for her existence. It was deeper than that. Stronger than that.

Lain just ends up shrugging.

"I guess so." Is all that ends up coming out as a result of all that inner turmoil. Trying to tell someone you've met that you're some sort of computer software, or a goddess, or something else entirely, but also a person, is just too difficult for a girl like Lain to do.
blindluck: (074)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
"That's interesting!" Nagito chirps; he'll have to keep an eye on her. "There isn't a lot of working technology here--like you already know--but maybe you can do something with the network. Though you might have to ask Ferryman-san for permission, or something..."

If it runs on literal notebooks, Nagito doesn't think it's exclusively technology.
beos: (pic#17772893)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ferryman-san? Lain blinks at that. Someone with some sort of authority? There weren't that many people out here to begin with, but Lain certainly hadn't met anyone with any kind of authority out here yet.

"Who is that?" She asks, and then looks down at her Navi, to the post the two were speaking of earlier.

"Ah, this person-" Lain holds up the personal Navi. "This them?"
blindluck: (066)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I believe they're the ones sending those, yes," Nagito says--admittedly it's a little unclear. "Ferryman-san is the one leading us through the afterlife. You can find them by the salt flats while we're still in the desert. Sometimes they hand out items, too!"

Nagito is making the Ferryman sound somewhere between a spirit and a video game NPC. But that's fine. He gestures to Lain's Navi.

"You see how it's talking about offering a memory to the Ferryman? That's who you're giving it to. In exchange for protection."
beos: (pic#17772890)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"If you forget a memory it's like it never happened."

She says this like it's a fact. Not up for interpretation or argument.

"I should speak to Ferryman-san."

She feels like she has so many more questions to ask now after meeting Komaeda-kun likely the only one who would be able to answer those questions would be the Ferryman themselves. Lain will have to think over everything carefully first though beforehand before seeking them out. Maybe a bit more snooping through the Network is in order.
blindluck: (066)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-03 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"More or less," Nagito says, though Lain sure sounds certain about it. "You don't have to give them up, but if you go the other way, the wraiths attack you, and you might lose a memory anyway. I guess it's about letting go of our lives, or something."

Nagito explains it neutrally. He has more complicated thoughts about it, but that wouldn't matter to her.

"I don't think Ferryman-san ever leaves their post, so they should be easy enough to find."
beos: (pic#17777932)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-06 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll find them."

Lain doesn't seem particularly worried about giving up memories, despite her outburst about the subject. It's accepted, just like that. Better to choose what to delete than to have it forced away from you.

A pause, and then, "Thank you. For your help." She says.
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
"It's no trouble!" Nagito smiles, he hopes encouragingly. "Good luck getting your questions answered!"
beos: (pic#17772887)

[personal profile] beos 2025-04-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Do they usually answer questions?" Lain asks

It's the way Nagito says that. It makes Lain wonder if the Ferryman is normally sort of dodgy about things...
blindluck: (004)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-04-08 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"They'll answer questions, but not always in the way people would prefer," Nagito says. "It could be because they're a spirit, or it could be they simply don't want to answer some things."
