TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

CHAT WITH THE FERRYMAN

[personal profile] theferryman 2025-02-05 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Ferryman is a speck at the edge of The River, sprawling as it is beneath the open sky, but as always, they hold their vigil. They will greet any new souls who arrive, help any that might struggle to pull themselves from The River, and answer any questions — though you might not always be satisfied by the answer.

Replies will be slow for the next couple of days. Thanks for your patience!]

Nagito Komaeda | current player, prospective characters welcome to reply!

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-06 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
A; Early Wildcard
[Nagito takes the long, safe route down the cliffside, stopping only to glance curiously over the edge of a cliff and cheerfully--if exhaustedly--suggest anyone taking the faster route do their best not to slip. Compared to his manic behavior on the way here, and his jittery bursts as they rested from the journey, now he's a cleaner, quieter kind of tired. It's not long after spotting the oasis that he slips away.

Anyone looking for him, or simply looking around, will find Nagito tucked into the smallest, least-inviting of the shelters, pressed tight into a corner rather than making use of any of the furniture, asleep. He's removed his left, mechanical arm, keeping it close on his lap, and seems completely unbothered sleeping sitting up in a corner on the floor. Touch him--or try to move the mechanical arm--and he'll wake up. Otherwise, just leave him be. It's fine.]

B; Flora and Fauna
[Later--a handful of hours, though with the way the light shifts here Nagito can't be sure how long he slept--Nagito sets about exploring the oasis. That there are animals here surprises him, though as he considers the idea further maybe it shouldn't. Animals die just like people. It was stranger that there weren't any in the cavern, surely.

The hamsters currently have his attention. He's crouched down some distance away, watching some of the larger ones. Hearing someone approach, he points to the one with the longest fur.]

Did you know some people call those kinds teddy bear hamsters?

C; The Dunes - Network
[Nagito set out into the sandy dunes without any destination in mind. He's familiar with traveling like that; his luck always finds some place or another for him to end up.

But, still obstinately unbeknownst to him, he doesn't have his luck here, and without that, wandering off into the desert is a great way to get yourself lost.]

Sorry to bother all of you while we're all still settling in! At least, I assume it hasn't actually been that long, even if I've seen a couple of night times out here already. There's really no need to bother with me or this message overmuch, or at all if you're busy! I was just wondering if anyone had tips for how to navigate back to the oasis when all you can see is sand!

[Maybe someone should help him out before he double dies in the desert.]

D; Late Wildcard
[Have something else in mind for Nagito? He can mostly be found hanging around the oasis, watching the animals, and searching all the buildings. If you have something specific you'd like, you can let me know at [plurk.com profile] maiiau!]

Beyond the River

[As the cave system opens into a desert, Sunny finds he has to take a few extra moments to look around. Standing there, his sole gaze sweeps over the expanse of sand before them and then… he looks around warily. Almost sure that a sign stating Orange Oasis might greet them somewhere.

The desert in front of them looks eerily like a certain place in his Headspace. Was he sure he wasn’t dreaming?

If Sunny had any sort of trouble traversing the city and caverns that came before, he has that much more difficulty now. The teen wasn’t athletic by any means, the sprawling and uneven landscape throwing off his already terrible depth perception (it was kind of hard to tell where the sand dipped into dangerous territory with only one eye…), and the heat was excruciating. Already he was covered in sweat, and they weren’t even halfway down the cliff…]

Beneath - Newcomer hook! And a bit of a jump scare for Sunny

[The River had simply… dried up. Or at least, it didn’t look like much of a River anymore.

Sunny was relieved from that standpoint: he couldn’t drown if a river didn’t have water, right?

Still… why was he down this far? Maybe sitting around the Oasis got to be a bit too much for him, maybe his memories were playing tricks (telling him to go find a certain pet rock around the desert), or… maybe he had spaced out, finding himself near the once-River.

Either way, the teen freezes like a deer in headlights as the mud crusted surface seems to move. Was… he already that dehydrated? Or more hallucinations? But no… the River cracked and shifted again.

Maybe you even reach a hand above the surface, looking for assistance (and scaring the soul out of Sunny a second time). You should do your best efforts to convince him that you are friendly and in need of help, otherwise he might be running back to the Oasis in fright…]

The Oasis

[To the surprise of probably no one, Sunny spends 90% of his time at the Oasis. Why? Well, it was very hot outside, the sun was too bright, and wandering around a desert without a secure source of Life Jam didn’t seem like a good idea… this was reality, right? Not Headspace? He was starting to doubt that even more now.

The erratic shifting of the time of day left him more tempted to sleep through the majority of his time here… and Sunny had very nearly tried to. Until, one moment, he was sleeping outside in the shade on a pleasant day, and not two hours later he woke up to being pelted with a thunderstorm in the middle of the night. It was terrifying.

So, indoors he stayed. Rummaging around in the contents of the leftover huts, he found another Captain Spaceboy comic, this one a different issue than the last. He didn’t get to read the one in the city, so you can be sure he’s delving into this one.

Occasionally, he can be found walking around the Oasis on the more mildly temperate afternoons, when evening is just on the cusp and desert weather skirts the line between just right and cooling off for the night. He wanders, searching, though looking wary. For what…? Only Sunny knows.]

The Dunes

[Sunny doesn’t venture into the Dunes - not on his own, now if someone were to try and convince him? Maybe. Probably not, but you certainly can try - but he does watch them quite often.

The Wraiths watch him, just like back in the city, causing a cold sweat to break out on his back despite the heat. He stays very well inside of the Ferryman’s light, remembering Kel’s injuries… or at least the blood on his friend’s clothes.

He never stays outside at night, but maybe you wander upon him during one of the rare evenings he’s sitting outside, seated on the ground and eye focusing on what lies beyond.

The teen startles a bit when he realizes someone is nearby, but he doesn’t run. That same sort of nervous energy runs through him as he fidgets, remaining quiet. He isn’t telling whoever it is to leave either…]

Wildcard - Network

[The message comes across more as handwritten than an electronic message, punctuated by tiny drawings of stars and rabbits and a pet rock (when Sunny’s mind wanders and he forgets this is a public forum).]

Don’t taste the sand. It isn’t brown sugar.

Flora and Fauna

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-06 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[When Sunny finally works up the courage to leave one of the huts and make his way back outside, he didn’t expect to see Nagito crouched over in the grass.

He could take a hint though - the other was watching something. Mirroring Nagito’s posture as best he could (even if he could already feel the sun beating down on them unpleasantly), he shook his head.

Expression seeming to ask ‘what’s that?’ A teddy bear hamster? It sounded like a strange amalgamation… or maybe an enemy creature in a game.]

Did you get stuck?

Thara Celehar | Chronicles of Osreth | Current Player (Open)

[personal profile] witnessvelama 2025-02-06 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The Oasis

The heat here doesn't agree with Celehar, not at all. Dead they may be, but there are some facts of the desert that settle over them with the weight of their expectation. In his black coat, with his pale skin and hair - the heat seems determined to make him weak and miserable with it. The shelters make for adequate protection, and when the wind whips up he's grateful for the length of his coat of office, but when the winds die away and the sun rises hot and fierce, he's driven more often than not to the dim, cool shelters.

On this particular day, longer, subjectively, than all the rest they've experienced so far, Celehar has been driven to abandon the coat entirely, leaving himself in simple pants with a white shirt and grey waistcoat. Even his braid has been coiled up and away from his neck, the pearl-studded pins rearranged in an attempt to make the hair stay where he's placed it. He's temporarily abandoned the cool shelter of the structures in favor of the waters of the oasis, making his way to the muddy edge to hunker on his heels and dip his hands in the cool water, biting back a groan as he does.

"Whatever I might have expected to Cross to... I had not expected a misery of this."

The Dunes

After taking time to recover and rest, away from the heat, Celehar finds the edge of the lantern's light, testing the boundary, but not passing it yet. He's not traversed the dunes unscathed - there's a fine dusting of sand that's blown up along his coat, and a more solid patch along the length where he must have lost his footing on the treacherous sand a time or two and fallen.

He has no mind for that, though. He's watching the wraiths past the edge of the lantern's protection, speaking occasionally to them, in a quiet voice.

"What were you, once? Do you remember? Could you?"

The wind picks up, tugging the hair free of his prelate's braid in heat-frizzed coils, but he pays this no mind. There's a storm coming - but still, he stands and watches the edges of the dunes.

[OOC notes: Happy to switch to brackets! Also feel free to go with another starter if that interests you more than the ones I've written here - Celehar can be found wandering just about anywhere.]

A! Shelter

[personal profile] witnessvelama 2025-02-06 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[The early misery of heat and wind, after such a harrowing trip down the cliffs, is enough to drive Celehar towards the shelters not long after arriving at the oasis. He didn't even climb down the cliff, but even after resting at the edge of the River-turned-flats, the climb had left him physically weary, ready to retreat for a time.

And so he'd had the same thought as Nagito - the abrupt change in lighting and the young man's efforts to tuck himself away mean that Celehar has moved more than a few steps into the space by the time his eyes adjust and he registers the slumped shape in the corner.]

Oh - my apologies.

[That, too, he says, before he realizes that he must have interrupted his rest, already taking a few steps back towards the entrance and bowing his head slightly in apology.]
blindluck: (066)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Nagito is kind of surprised Sunny approached him--he'd assumed after the Crossing that everybody would distance themselves. Well, maybe he's looking for clues or something. Or maybe he likes hamsters.]

That one there. [He follows the hamster with his finger as it moves to better point it out.] But they're actually long-haired Syrian hamsters. I knew someone in my world who bred them.
blindluck: (035)

save him sunny

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I can move around!

[Nagito may have misunderstood that text...]
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[When Nagito wakes there's a brief expression of flat assessment and calculation before he realizes where he is and what situation he's in (in the desert, dead) and relaxes again. The odds of Celehar attacking him seem pretty low, so he doesn't have any particular need to be ready to spring right now. Instead, he stretches. He hasn't tied off the sleeve of his hoodie, so it just flops over as he raises his arm. It seems like his flesh ends just a little below the eblow.]

You don't need to apologize on my account! It isn't as if this is my bedroom or anything. [Though he'll probably end up using it as temporary accommodations.] It's important to search every building thoroughly, after all.

[Between the passage of time and the nap, you could almost believe Nagito didn't have a loud, dramatic episode just a few hours ago with how he looks now.]
solitarynote: (Pout)

I almost choked on laughter XD

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
[…it seems like he has. Well, that’s good to know - that Nagito could move. It would be a problem if he couldn’t. For Nagito, he thinks.]

Are you… stuck somewhere in the desert?

[There: a refined question.]
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Yes, I am. I'm afraid I can't be much more specific than that, however.

Bring on the humor!

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
How you dune-ing? [Desert joke anyone? No? Alright then…]

Probably a lot of sand. Any…? [followed by a drawing of a piece of land and an X. ~~translation: landmark~~

The heat was already starting to get to him…]
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-07 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
So far the heat has been balanced out with how cold it gets when the sun goes down!

I haven't found any buried treasure, but I haven't done a lot of digging. But that's more appropriate for a beach setting, isn't it?

[Listen, it's not actually that unreasonable for Nagito to stumble across buried treasure.]
solitarynote: (Check in)

Momentarily forgetting Nagito is LOST

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-07 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
[The weather really was…] Flippant.

Is it?
[The vagueness of a memory and Sunny is back to drawing: a few scribbles resembling waves and a beach ball. That sounded more like a beach than a treasure hunt.]

No luck then?
blindluck: (002)

well it's not like nagito's acting like it

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I always have luck! It's just a matter of if I'm on an upswing or a downswing.

[A downswing this time, it looks like. Maybe to make up for getting dragged out of the Crossing in one piece. Surely it was luck that caused people to help him out then.]
solitarynote: (Surprise)

Sunny is a lot more chatty on Network XD

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
At least it isn’t a backswing - you wouldn’t be making much progress then.

[Ok, last joke. Clearly they had more important things to worry about… like where Nagito was! Vaguely, Sunny debated trying to find Makoto. Surely he would know what to do… but maybe Nagito didn’t have that much more time to wait around. Desert storms could be brutal if one hit.]

What is near you?

[Sand, Sunny. Lots and lots of sand. It was everywhere. Coarse and gritty and getting in his shoes all hours of the day.]

[Sunny blinks. That was more specific, but all he can think about is some strange colored Neapolitan ice cream…]

o7

[After sending a small drawing saluting Nagito - whatever did that mean?? - Sunny looks around. It would probably be best to find someplace tall to see if he can spot the multicolored sand… just the thought had him sweating and near exhaustion. What was the next best solution?-]

Is there a dune nearby?

[-Maybe Nagito could climb something tall and then Sunny wouldn’t have to!]

Re: XD

There are a few of them! I probably shouldn't go back to the one I just climbed down, but I could try another one.

[Nodding, he forgets Nagito can’t see him. Climbing a different dune sounded like a good plan.]

Oasis sand is yellow. [Then…] Just yellow.

[Maybe Nagito could follow the yellow brick sand road back to the Oasis?
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Nagito heads for the yellowest sand dune. He finds more sand dunes.]

There's purple sand now as well. But I suppose I should keep following the yellow sand instead.

Yellow

[Sunny agrees. He didn’t seem anything but yellow sand here. Has he gone outside the Oasis to check if the sand changes colors just outside the border? Nope! What were they going to do if the sand has a strange color change pattern?? Then…]

Why- [There’s a place where the letter ‘y’ drags on, like Sunny maybe got a pebble stuck under the page and ran over it with his marker, or maybe he started to write but then debated his thoughts.] did you leave?
