TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

[Makoto's already flushed glare deepens more at Nagito's words along with a pout as he tried to temper his frustration. Baby steps, Makoto.]

Only because I found help from others!

[He could start with how of course he worries, even if he might not need to. That's what happens when friends disappear without telling anyone!]

If I hadn't gotten help from all those wonderful people, who knows how long you would have been stuck here?!

[Congrats Nagito, you have activated lecturing Makoto. Be afraid.]

[Soo Won welcomed the company and he greeted Celehar with a smile before turning his attention back to the stars.]

The stars here seem to move more quickly than normal, so each night shows a different part of the sky. I suppose it's not surprising given how unpredictable everything here is but I had hoped to be able to use the stars to navigate.

[It was proving more difficult than he expected. By the time he had mapped out the mismatch of familiar and unfamiliar stars here, they changed again. It felt like a race against time, which flowed strangely here, adding even more challenge to the problem.]

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-12 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
[Nagito's smile remains perfectly intact. He still thinks Makoto is worrying far too much about someone far too insignificant.]

Since that's the sort of thing your talent is good at, it seems like I wouldn't have been stuck very long at all!

[This result was inevitable because hope is inevitable.]
cloversandcranes: (That's what you focus on?)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-02-12 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
[What's with people telling him that he doesn't have to worry about them?!]

No matter how many times you say it, doesn't mean I'll stop worrying.
protectorofkouka: (friendly smile)

[personal profile] protectorofkouka 2025-02-12 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah this reminds him of general Joo doh's nagging. How nostalgic.]

Will you stop worrying if I find my way back soon?
cloversandcranes: (Frustrated blush)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-02-12 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Makoto's glare/pout deepens even more at Nagito's words. The heat is really starting to get to Makoto as well, making his usual patience harder to keep.]

Komaeda-kun...

[He nearly growls as he stares down Nagito before he sighs and deflates.]

Whatever. Let's go back, okay? This heat is killing me.

[Then he stalks back towards the direction he came from before turning back to see if Nagito was following.]
cloversandcranes: (That's what you focus on?)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-02-12 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
Only if you make it back soon. I don't need two people lost out there.

[Soo Won was still recovering from the crossing. He couldn't remember what caused him so much distress but his soul still felt weary in a way he didn't want to think about. Instead he continued to try to learn what he could about this place, and he made a curious discovery.

He politely greeted the Ferryman with a small smile before it dropped with his concern.]

The wraiths here are different. Can wraiths not cross like the rest of us?

I've been trying to figure that out as well. Stars would be the best way to navigate out here however the stars here seemed to move across the sky so quickly that you find yourself looking at a different patch of sky each night. That and the unpredictable day and night cycles makes it rather difficult to map out the night sky.
protectorofkouka: (hawk)

[personal profile] protectorofkouka 2025-02-12 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be back before you know it.

[Probably, but he didn't want to worry Makoto even more by admitting that it would be difficult to make his way back.]

Who else is lost? I can look for them while I'm out here.

You better.

[Wow if only he could read the OOC comments Soo Won...]

Komaeda Nagito. He's my friend and decided to leave without telling someone. Like a certain someone I'm talking to.

Likewise Soo Won's message appears to be handwritten. Smartphones are beyond his time so his device looks like a book that he can write in.

That's a thoughtful idea, although I suspect people may need some time to recover first. Perhaps you could start with a meeting for all of us to come together and share our discoveries? It will give everyone a chance to open up in a less personal setting whereas therapy may sound a bit intimidating to some.

He's willing to help, although he respectfully will decline the offer of therapy. He's fine and he has far more important mysteries to solve about this place.
protectorofkouka: (friendly)

[personal profile] protectorofkouka 2025-02-12 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Yep, he definitely reminds him of Joo Doh.]

In my defense it wasn't my intention to wander far from the oasis, but regardless I'm sorry for worrying you.

[The challenge just makes it interesting. He'll be fine.]
cloversandcranes: (pic#17672977)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-02-12 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
[Soo Won no...]

I think you completely missed the point. You can do what you want, just let people know where you're going BEFORE getting lost.

[Apology rejected!]
protectorofkouka: (friendly smile)

[personal profile] protectorofkouka 2025-02-12 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah, but he's never really worried about that before.]

I'll keep that in mind.

[Until the next time where he forgets to inform anyone again. Sorry Makoto.]
cloversandcranes: (pic#17672904)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-02-12 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
[That's better.]

You better. Now get back safely.

[The heat mixed with his frustration of two of his friends leaving without telling someone made him more irritated than usual. As an attempt to calm himself while justifying his exasperation, he added after a moment.]

Please.

[Unable to really argue that - and, moreso, realising that he'd only keep deflecting any compliments -, she recapitulates.]

So the documents were written by previous souls who passed through here and got to spend more time with the Ferryman. I wonder who left the lantern sign - the others, because the information they wrote down relates to the Ferryman, or the Ferryman, to ensure that we'd find them. But in the latter case, why then not reveal the contents?

[If the Ferryman had asked for the notes, anxious to cover up potential revelations, Nagito certainly would have mentioned it - no, he'd have handed them over, she's sure. So their guardian doesn't seem to be concerned about them having them... but what if that only results from the certainty that they won't be able to decypher them?]

This is vexing.

[Uh oh… this was why communication was important… and why Sunny more often than not couldn’t follow the standard rhyme and reason of it.

Misunderstanding #1. He’d better fix that.

With the tips of his ears burning in embarrassment, he scattered the sand he had written in, attempting to be more clear.]

Maybe they can read? You could communicate that way, if your voice doesn’t reach.

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-12 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sunny blinks.

Oh, she meant in the afterlife in general. He guessed that he would have thought similar. More caves, more darkness…

But Sunny’s thoughts had been directed towards what a desert might be considered. Oops.

Tips of his ears now burning in embarrassment, he nodded… even if that wasn’t true. Sunlight hurt his eyes pretty easily after so many years inside.]

It is bright.

[Especially compared to the cavern they had just come from. Was… that a noncommittal reply? Too direct? He hoped it wasn’t offensive.]
solitarynote: (Pout)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-12 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sunny breathed out a sigh when he could make out the extremely tiny visage that was Nagito cresting over the hill.

Was it disappointment? Relief? He could no sooner identify his emotions. It was easier to just nod and call this situation done.

Still… he didn’t have any right to tell Nagito to not go into the desert alone. And, maybe worse, the other might get the idea that Sunny should go explore too… and that meant too much heat, too much walking, and too much conversation.

Instead, he raised a hand in a semblance of a wave.]
solitarynote: (Sad)

Lottery… like… Blackjack?

[Sunny’s expression was puzzled - one could win their way into school? Then again, Nagito had said his ‘luck’ had gotten him to win the lottery when kidnapped, so maybe that made more sense than Sunny realized…]

Hope… [The teen had a good idea of Hope now, what with the amount of times and depth that Nagito had explained it with. He nodded, almost seriously, as the information sunk in. Makoto was Absolute Good… and that made sense - the other had saved and support Sunny so many times already without expecting payment.

It was a safe feeling. It made him feel all the more worse, that someone as tainted as Sunny was receiving help from someone as kind as Makoto… and Nagito too…]
solitarynote: (Sad)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-12 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[A sneeze followed Mari’s efforts, but the air cleared. What was worse - desert sand particles or mites of dust? Either way, it set off Sunny’s dry throat.

Even if, ignoring the fact that he didn’t really clean his room like their mother had asked.

Sunny certainly noted Mari’s excitement and… it made his stomach cramp. Why did she want to room with him? After everything he had done? Maybe she just didn’t know… and he wouldn’t be divulging that information. The fact did nothing to ease the way he fidgeted as she fussed over him]

N-no…

[Invitation decline - Sunny would really just get in her way more often than not. He didn’t have the stamina to clean the entire room.]

[…why did his sister think that was a remotely better option for him? Sure, Sunny had a great imagination, but he wasn’t good with planning. Wasn’t really even good with people.

He shook his head, then remembered that she couldn’t actually see him so…]

No.

[Another flat out refusal. Sorry Mari, you might have to bring him there yourself.]

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-12 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ah. Sunny could practically feel the disappointment wafting off of that reply. Or maybe it was confusion - Makoto seemed too nice to be disappointed by something as small as Sunny eating sand.]

Yep. It was brown sugar.

[Dreams were weird like that. More often than not, Sunny had most likely gone to bed with his stomach rumbling and that was the source of a desert filled with sweets.]

Desert does not equal dessert. [At least here it doesn’t.]

Stargazing

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Like Soo Won, Sunny stayed within the confines of the Oasis. Unlike the other, however, he wasn’t apt to do much of anything - let alone going outside at night.

Sunny was afraid of many things, and the dark was certainly one of them.

However… tonight seemed like a lighter darkness, stars shining above, no red light filtering through the makeshift room he had been staying in… and Soo Won was on the ground.

Belatedly, Sunny would have wondered if the other was dead… but they all were, so that thought didn’t cross his mind till later.

His approach was apologetically silent, like he didn’t want to interrupt the other’s thinking, voice coming out in a raspy whisper.]

What is?
