TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

Not pictured in the message to follow are Arche's struggles to understand the function of the book, approximately two and a half hours of beating her metaphorical and then literal head against the wall to register her use of it under her username, subsequent attempts to figure out how it's filing the messages, and fruitless hunt for a pen before realizing she can write with her finger.

Her messages are in a fast, remarkably clear hand which has a tendency to end sentences sharply, as if she's used to leaky pens.

workaday: Please forgive my ignorance but what is a Therapy and how do you acquire one?

People who absolutely need therapy: Arche.

People whose settings will not invent therapy before the apocalypse: also Arche.

[There's a beat of silence as she processes his explanation. Allynbee was never one for big displays of emotion, not when there was something huge on the line. It doesn't get much bigger than being stuck in the afterlife and for the first time, she feels like she might be out of her depth.

But this is a problem and Commander Shepard solves problems. She can work with that.
]

Well, it may be worth seeing if we can find a way to communicate with people in a different afterlife.

"And what happens when I have nothing left?" He asks, and he knows it's mostly a rhetorical question, he doesn't think they'll actually answer it. "That is the goal, right? To keep us going until we have nothing."

[personal profile] callsignhornet 2025-02-24 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
[There's a faint quirk to Allynbee's lips like she wants to smile, but can't quite manage it.]

So where do we go from here? This place feels so different, it doesn't even feel like it's on the same planet. Did something happen?

He nods. He remembers watching his own leg heal up, and frankly, how disturbing that was. If it was traumatic for him he can only imagine how it impacted Kel.

"I understand entirely. It's a good thing, of course, but we should both do our best to not get injured from here on out." He says quietly, knowing that he himself cannot uphold the promise, but if he can get Kel to agree, then, that'll be good for everyone involved.

And he nods again, particularly because he doesn't want to upset Sunny either, "If I do manage to find another shirt around here I will save it for you." Dankovsky says. He may just approach that Ferryman for one.

Makes sense to me.

[The feeding doesn't bother her, though she is a little curious at how Need figured out how bone was the thing that the creatures enjoyed. And once she approaches with a very reasonable question, Allynbee feels her face flush faintly. Right.]

I got ...Lost, I think. I was trying to explore the Caverns and just...ended up somewhere strange. The Ferryman led me here and I haven't been able to get back to it by exploring, either.

Do we know who had the urge to move first? It might give us a clue as to how this place is affecting us.

Should I call you Prelate?

[Better to ask than to be too formal, though she suspects the title will be fine. For a moment they keep watching the wraiths, Allynbee with a bit more urgency in her gaze before finally she huffs her own sigh.]

Are these the only wraiths you've seen?
urtitan: (Please Rest in Peace)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-02-24 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
[(OMG where did the rest go!! But it wasn't anything important!)]

Not a request, no... a delivery, rather. I asked the Ferryman for sunhats.

[She has hers on, reminiscent of the one she had back home with its natural fibers, and the one she holds out to Celehar is black and wide-brimmed, as if chosen to match his attire.]

They'll make our stay here easier on us.

Dankovsky looks so SO offended. He crosses his arms, and even gives a bit of a 'hmph' as he does.

"As I said, I refuse to be made a fool of." He states, doubling down, "What different places would you even be speaking of? Alternate universes? How did you even come to such a conclusion?"

Being as isolated as the Soviet Union is, even in it's early days, Dankovsky has just assumed strange manners of dress and speech patterns just indicated different part of the globe. Yes, he is that stubborn.
marblenest: (pic#17593255)

[personal profile] marblenest 2025-02-24 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Not exactly." He sighs.

Is it worth giving up on? Maybe. He likely will for the day, as exhausted as he is. But who knows what even constitutes as a day here. The sun rising and setting at random intervals is enough to make him feel depressed.

But the sun is setting right now, and it seems foolish to wander out intentionally in the dark, so he'll be staying put for now.

"... Have you been watching me?" He suddenly asks like he just realized this, looking up to Hanako's vantage point as he does.

"My globe, sir, is quite mapped. And while not every centimeter is known to the noble art of cartography, I think I should have noticed during my own education if some of all of this had come up! That -" Arche points to a nearby hamster which, obligingly, freezes in place, "- is the closest thing to a familiar sight I've experienced since I got here, and the version of it that I am used to is a multi-ton apex predator! Which should, I believe, imply that at a bare minimum our experiences are displaced in time, if not in space, and that our contexts diverge greatly. I should have thought a man of reason might be open to the direct explanation, elder."

[personal profile] marblenest 2025-02-24 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
His face loses the edge of anger as it's slowly replaced with anxiety. Arche is simply too insistent to be lying on purpose. Maybe she's insane? Or maybe...

The alternative, the idea that she could be right, makes his face actively grow pale.

"No, no, that cannot be so..." He says, his voice trailing off. It sounds like he's genuinely trying to convince himself now, rather than the confidence he had before, "I think I need to have a lie down." The genuine distress is kicking in, boy does he wish he had a glass of wine right about now.
ourlastadventure: (Bonk)

[personal profile] ourlastadventure 2025-02-24 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
"By all means, don't let me detain you!" Arche makes a big show of stepping aside and lifting one arm in a 'go on then' sort of gesture. "Rest well. I will be expecting an apology for your rudeness when you've regained your strength."
hasapoint: you are wrong and she is right (A consciousness that smoldered endlessly)

[personal profile] hasapoint 2025-02-24 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Huh.

[Need braces her elbow in the cupped palm of her other hand and taps her cheek, considering.]

I don't think any of us can get back to the Caverns on our own, when we were walking out here the path changed behind us. What's 'somewhere strange'? Did you skip over the hard parts of the Crossing?
toilet_bound: (Default)

Such a shame that they aren’t classmates XD

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-24 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone except the Ferryman? [That was news to him - at least, the latter part was. Normally, someone in charge of a Boundary was already dead… interesting that their guide would be the only one closest to the living then. If that definition even qualified.]

[Still, Frieda’s question was quite sobering. She seemed to have a lot of worries for things that didn’t concern her - he was getting that feeling.]

Mmm… there certainly are accidents. I guess it all depends: the state of society, the stressors on the students… that sort of thing affects them. No more than any other school, I would think. [At least in Japan. Sure, Kamome Academy had its fair share of apparitions haunting the place, but so did the streets outside the school. So did the world - he figured. It was simply that the events that Hanako knew of were tied directly to the school, just as he was. All stated very matter of factly.]
toilet_bound: (Huh?)

Yup! He certainly wasn’t prepared for that XD

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-24 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The shock of her answer was so great that Hanako stood in place, blinking a few times, as his brain processed. Differing societal norms indeed..

“Is… that so? Your clothes must be pretty special then!” He recovered quickly. It had him wondering what sort of society she came from, to have such a nonchalant nature. “Everyone here has clothing, as far as I’ve seen, so I’m sure you won’t have much to worry about there~”

toilet_bound: (Hmmmm?)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-24 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Her answer has him humming in thought - even as it cuts deep. He doesn’t let that show on the surface, acknowledging the feeling underneath… even as something unrecognizable flashes in his gaze.

“‘Who you want to be’… you almost make it sound like we have a future. People like you and me. That’s not possible.” After all… whatever choices they might be given now, they can’t impact what came before. Hanako knew: whatever you couldn’t accomplish in life, it couldn’t be accomplished here either.

His gaze locks on the dracolisks again. “What makes you keep trying? To ride one of them?” She had gotten knocked off pretty hard. Was it the lack of pain? Boredom? Something she simply wanted to do?
toilet_bound: (Default)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-24 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s worth a try! [Hanako knows he’s had stranger things happen, for sure.] I have to wonder what you’re trying to accomplish with that though~?

[Call it curiosity, but the person in front of him seems oddly pragmatic to start groping in the dark for answers.]
toilet_bound: (Default)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-24 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
“Such a shame.” Still, Hanako wasn’t surprised. Even from his vantage point on the roof, there wasn’t much to be observed. Deserts were vast - finding anything might be a fruitless endeavor. “It helps to know what you’re searching for, though.” As if he could tell Dankovsky was wandering without aim.

“Ah! Just a tad~” Better to not make the man have to crane his neck upwards like that! The boy pushed off from the roof, landing on the ground easily. “There isn’t much to amuse me around here!”

Sunny could only blink curiously as the girl seemed to weigh her options, searching for some sort of conclusion. He… didn’t really want to be the one to break the news that ‘yes, she was dead.’ The teen would leave that to someone else… it was bound to cause more questions, ones that he either didn’t have the answer to or didn’t feel comfortable sitting through a potential barrage of feelings.

“U-Um…” He had to force his volume up, to be heard over her murmurings. That made him self-conscious though - he was clearly interrupting her, wasn’t he? “If… hurt… there’s a doctor… here…”

That was the most he could get out. She didn’t look injured, but from her own thought process, clearly she expected to be. Then again, Sunny’s cloth-wrapped eye was a reminder of the pain of arrival. Maybe she just needed a moment…?

Her sincere thanks has the tips of his ears burning in embarrassment. He shook his head - it wasn’t like he helped much (or could, for that matter. He was still very weak physically himself. The fact that she had gotten out of the River was truly due to her own efforts).
solitarynote: (Surprise)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-24 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[The streak of surprise that ran through him at that left him speechless. At least on paper. The next utterance was actually out loud.]

O-oh…

[He remembered the Ferryman saying that the others would support him. And that was true. But… Sunny was used to being by himself. To have to face things alone, even with his make-believe friends by his side. The idea that people actually wanted to be here and support him through tough times was…

Something new.

Somehow he had made it, like they said. He wasn’t able to identify the strangely hollow yet warm feeling in his chest. The next reply was in writing again.]

Ok. Thank you. For protecting us. And making sure we got here. [Finally, he felt like he could say that. It was only right - the Ferryman had seemed just as drained as they had, and he was sure having all those disconnected voices had been just as unpleasant for them.

What else was there?]
If… it would be alright…? Frieda and Nagito suggested a few things… but I’m having a hard time finding them…

[Maybe Sunny thought that mentioning his two acquaintances might make the request more credible. He found asking things for himself alone was difficult.]
solitarynote: (Check in)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-24 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sunny is glad that Celehar seems to ooze some sort of confidence - or was it comfort? - as they walked forward. It put him at ease somewhat… even if he still felt a little nervous.

Following behind the taller man, he was glad when they came to a stop with some distance between them and the Wraiths, a physical barrier of sorts between them and potential danger.

The teen deliberated for a few moments as Celehar gave him the go-ahead. The simpler the better, he thinks, when starting out.]

Hi

[Or… maybe it was too simple, as he waited for Celehar and the Wraith’s reaction, fidgeting in place.]
solitarynote: (Default)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-24 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sunny seems to visible relax at Kel’s words, not that he thought his friend would rip the material away from him anyway. Kel just wasn’t like that.

And the doctor’s own offer of help made him nod in agreement. Another writing in his notebook:]

I’ll help look too. Even if it’s temporary. The clothes don’t stay here.
urtitan: (We must accept our fate.)

That'd be a chaotic mash-up!

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-02-24 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[She hastily interjects:]

Well, the Ferryman probably isn't a mortal - so neither dead nor alive, not in the same ways as use.

[As he elaborates on the factors that influence his school's mortality rate, her expression grows sombre for a moment. The state of society... that reminds her of her talks with Makoto yet again. Hopefully, it isn't quite as bad in this boy's world - but even so, individual woes can weigh heavily enough on a child's heart. Overall, however, he does sound chipper enough!]

...

It sounds like you enjoyed your afterlife back home.

[That's good, isn't it? Even now that he's been torn away from there, he seems to take it light-heartedly.]
