TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

[When the mud finally relinquishes its hold on Hanako, the boy lets out a triumphant cry… even as he almost falls over. Thankfully, his savior also balances him so his face doesn’t eat sand.]

I’m saved! Thanks! I thought I was going to die again~

[And wasn’t that the truth! Normally spirits wouldn’t have to fear death itself, aside from exorcism or fading away, but here… that mud had felt awfully real.]

Looks like I’m all in one piece… as much as a soul can be. What about you? That mud was more clingy than I thought.

[He gives her a bright smile, seemingly unbothered by the predicament now that it was behind him… quite literally. He took a step forward, closer to her and further from the River.]

I can’t help it! I’ve never walked on sand before.

[He picks himself up with an embarrassed laugh, making his way carefully over to her.]

More importantly… doesn’t this area seem familiar? There’s so many hills around here. [Dunes. He probably meant dunes, but Hanako really isn’t aware of desert geography at all.]

[There's a faint pause as Hanako mentions having died once. And here she thought multiple deaths was a uniquely Shepard experience.]

You're welcome.

[She doesn't comment on the way the kid just keeps going as if he hadn't just been dragged out of the mud.]

I'm fine - didn't come through the mud.

[She inclines her head toward him, curious.]

What's your name?
callsignhornet: (Default)

[personal profile] callsignhornet 2025-02-16 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
It takes some practice.

[Hanako makes it over and she nods at his observation.]

Yeah, I think this is my third or fourth time passing by. The sandstorm turned me around.

Haven't seen anything like that. What were you near?

Maybe there's something in the environment causing hallucinations

[Lyn wanders and finds herself in the presence of The Ferryman once more.

She doesn't know what to say. There are still so many questions and there's still the matter of the Smart Wraith that she spied in the cave by the dunes. After a few beats, Lyn speaks up.
]

Thank you.

[Hanako isn’t bothered by the fact that the woman in front of him doesn’t respond to most of his ramblings. In fact-]

It’s amazing you could see or grab me at all! Most people can’t. Which means… you must have some strong spiritual power, or be an exorcist, or… [His smile turns a bit calculating now.] someone close to death?

[But then she’s asking for his name, and his demeanor grows more open again.] I’m Hanako! Most know me as Hanako of the Toilet, Seventh Wonder of Kamome Academy. Though… I’m sure that doesn’t mean much here.

[It didn’t look like there were any toilet stalls around, at least the immediate area.] Who might you be?

It does, doesn’t it? I’m used to floating everywhere, and school hallways are generally pretty even-leveled! [Except for stairs. Not a problem if you could float, but they burn the legs more often than not if you have to run them.]

Oh, a sandstorm? [His head titled a bit as he thought.] I didn’t encounter one, but the days feel a lot shorter here. And the nights! [They have probably come from different directions and just ended up together somehow.]

Was it here? Or the Cavern?

[Sunny was trying to stop the rising dread in him. Kel had seemed pretty hurt during the Crossing, and the Wraiths then had seemed to act different… at least, that’s what he had heard second-hand. Sunny had went with the Ferryman, so he hadn’t dealt with the Wraiths.]

[The rambling doesn't bother Allynbee, though she mentally notes the way Hanako's smile shifts. Hmm.]

I figure we're all close to death here, but yeah I'm familiar.

[She waits for the reaction to that, decently sure it's not going to be the expected response. Which means his introduction almost catches her off-guard. She blinks once. Twice.

And commits immediately to never acknowledging the bit about toilets.
]

Commander Allynbee Shepard, Systems Alliance Navy. A similarly useless title, I guess.

[At the encouragement, Sunny nods, happily continuing! Frieda was right - it seemed like Captain Spaceboy was dealing with a lot of the problems they were facing (minus being actually dead, unless Sunny had missed a lot of comic issues.

Continuing through the story, the teen leans close to let Frieda see the words on the page. He reads some stuff aloud - mostly sound effects or when Captain Spaceboy says something really cool - but the brightly colored illustrations easily sweep them into the tale.

Captain Spaceboy crosses the strangely empty desert, interrupted by sudden sandstorms, giant space worms, and the Blistering Heat! Until, finally, the Captain approaches the entrance to a dark cave…

And the issue ends.

Sunny’s cheeks are flushed happily, though he looks a little sad that the issue is over.]

Ah…

The cavern moving towards to the dunes. Had a strange-looking eye painted in the mouth of the cave I was in. Noticed it and the wraith trying to wait out a sandstorm.

Have you seen anything that you would call out as "weird"?

[Sure, this place is weird but there's weird-weird]
callsignhornet: (Helmet Forward)

[personal profile] callsignhornet 2025-02-16 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Have you tried floating?

[This place feels dreamlike at times. It might be worth treating it like one.]

Time moves strangely. I wish I could get a bead on what the cycles are doing.

[When was the last time Frieda could light-heartedly enjoy a gripping story like this? Having read plenty of books with her younger siblings, the activity is associated with many fond memories for her, and reading with Sunny brings those happy times back to her even in death.

They're terribly misplaced in this new location, never having been to the desert before - but so his Captain Spaceboy, and he's tackling his situation with practicality and bravery. It is inspiring, even for her! At the abrupt cliffhanger, she comfortingly rubs Sunny's back.]

We'll have to look for the next volume in all these heaps of things! And if it's not there, we'll have to imagine for ourselves what may be waiting for him in the cave.

[It may not be accurate, but it's not like she hasn't made up many bedtime stories in her time!]

I just hope there there aren't any space worms in our desert here... but they're so big, I'm sure we'd have heard their rumbling in the dunes by now!

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-02-16 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Do you think we can still sustain sun damage?

[Whether they can or not, she feels the heat and the natural impulse to find shade. With Need having taken her outerwear off, her eyes briefly linger on the damage to her clothing. She finds herself quietly grateful that her own dress and thin robe didn't manifest as shredded as they must have been by the Attack Titan's teeth.

Opening her mouth to - to do what, again express her condolences, she isn't sure herself -, she holds back. Need can't remember her death anymore, can she? She shouldn't remind her, much as she thinks that she has cause to be proud of her sacrifice.]

[Sunny has to take a moment to think. He really hasn’t gone outside of the Oasis since they arrived…] No… the weather is weird. Hot and wet and dry too often. Night and day too. But not the Wraiths. Sorry.

[He flinches even as he writes out the message. Not having communicated with this person before, he hoped he didn’t offend them somehow. His information wasn’t even useful.

It was like waiting for the other shoe to drop.]
toilet_bound: (Hmmmm?)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-16 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh~? [Allynbee certainly receives a non-traditional answer; anyone else might have freaked out. Hanako mostly looks curious about that.] Everyone here? What sort of place did I end up in?

[That second question was more directed towards himself. The boy smiled again at her own introduction.]

I’m sure most titles seem moot here. Still, I think I’ll call you… Captain! Shouldn’t let all your hard work go to waste, now should we~?
toilet_bound: (Embarrassed)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-16 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I have! [Hanako gives a small hop, though his feet land firmly on the ground.] The first time I wasn’t so lucky - almost fell back into that River. No floating for me, it seems.

But that makes sense - guess my privileges as a School Wonder got revoked or something that second time I ‘died’…

[There was limited knowledge he could go off of, but Hanako knew for a fact that he wasn’t the one in charge of this place.]

Spreading rumors? Surely you could do something like that yourself. I'm sure you'd do a better job at it than someone like me!

[Though it's not as if he can't spread a rumor, intentionally or unintentionally.]
blindluck: (003)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-16 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
That was that comic book you found, wasn't it? [Nagito rarely forgets an investigation.] I guess it could be pretty similar to that, if you'd grown up in a world where he was real.
toilet_bound: (Hmmmm?)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-16 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm~ I guess I could. Tsuchigomori always said it’s best to spread your own rumors. [One hand rested against his face, almost cradling it, as he thought.] But, you see? I don’t think that’s any fun. It’s better when you have someone else do it for you - feels more authentic - and I’m out of a personal assistant now~

[With the nonchalant way he said those words, one almost couldn’t tell the strange ache that he felt at that absence. Uh oh, time to redirect!]

Still… ‘someone like you’… you don’t have much faith in yourself, do you, Shounen?
solitarynote: (Blush Surprise)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-16 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Sunny looks at Frieda then, looks at her longer than he’s used to actually staring at another person. He doesn’t fidget, doesn’t say anything for a moment. His hand starts to reach out towards her, but he clenches his fist, lowering it.

He wants to tell her he would protect her, even if there were space worms, but… Sunny isn’t strong. Sunny isn’t brave. Sunny isn’t Omori… he’s just himself, and he’s none of those things.

Instead, he nods, redirecting his thoughts.]
We… could look. Or make it… up… I’m… good at that…

[It’s maybe more words than he’s used to stringing together, even after having just read the comic out loud. But they’re his words, his voice, his admission… and there was something important about that.]
solitarynote: (Surprise)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-16 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Sunny nods, a bit surprised.] You… remembered… [Then, the tips of his ears burn. Not that Nagito got offended by anything so far, but…] S-sorry…

[He didn’t want the other teen thinking that he didn’t pay attention or something. That would be an insult, intentional or not.

Still… he has to nod at Nagito’s suggestion. If Captain Spaceboy had existed in real life back home, and if Sunny would have actually met him… that would have been a more pleasant way to get to the afterlife. He would have died of happiness. Probably.]
blindluck: (035)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-16 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Of course not. [He says it so cheerfully, though.] I'm not particularly special and only just barely talented. I'm sure it would take you no time at all to find someone better suited to the task!

[He switches tracks just as smoothly as he'd put himself down. His opinion on his self-esteem is just unimportant as the rest of him.] But what would spreading rumors do for you here?
