TEST DRIVE #1

TDM # 1
Welcome to The Cavern, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active NOV—JAN. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— THE RIVER
The River is wide, black, and deep. It is so deep, and so dark, and so cold, that when you wake deep beneath its surface you may, for a moment, think that this is all there is. An abyss, a vacuum, a void. Nothingness in all directions.

It might even be what you expected, coming from wherever you were Before. The blackness, at least. Perhaps the cold. Maybe even the pain: all-encompassing, all-consuming. If a mortal wound brought you here, it might feel like it's being torn open anew, over and over again.

The current is simply slow, however, not non-existent. And you can swim. (Or, even if you can't, that's more of a procedural problem than anything: you don't need to breathe down here, it seems. Perhaps you don't need to breathe anymore at all.)

It hurts. It hurts so much. But if you can just concentrate long enough to pull yourself up onto the rocky shoreline, or even enough to get your head above the surface of the water, that pain will dissipate, almost as if it was never there at all. When you have the presence of mind to examine yourself, you'll find that you are actually hale and whole, with your body exactly as you expect it to be.

There are others in your same predicament. Maybe they can help you; maybe you can help them. You're all in this together, after all.

— THE CAVERN
Once you do finally pull yourself free from The River, you'll find that there was never any abyss at all. On the contrary, there's quite a lot to see — though your eyes might need a minute or two to adjust.

The Cavern yawns around you, the main chamber alone large enough to house a small town, and the ceiling too high to make out through the darkness. There's some light: you can see the eerie green glow of bioluminescent plants lining far-away walls, and tracing the underside of the land bridge that extends over The River. There are pinpricks up high on the cliffs above The River that are organized enough to suggest intervention, or at least planning.

There's something else, too — something orders of magnitude brighter than anything else in the chamber. Its glow is dim on this side of The River, and it's difficult to discern where exactly the light is coming from, just that it isn't coming from anywhere outside the cave. You feel as though you might be safer if you got closer, but maybe that's just because any light at all is comforting in a situation like this. If nothing else, you'd probably find whoever is holding it.

Either way, whether you follow the light or don't, there's plenty of time to be alone with your thoughts. Or to share them, if you're so inclined, with the others that are here with you, emerging one by one from the depths of The River.

Perhaps you've already accepted what's happened to you. Perhaps you need time, and it will take some discussion with the others to arrive at the one thing you all have in common. Perhaps even after that it's still too much, or you still aren't ready. However you get there, though, there's no way around it: you are dead.

If you have questions, The Ferryman is available to answer them.

KEEP TO THE LIGHT
— THE LANTERN
The source of the light is a lantern — specifically, it is The Ferryman's Lantern, an ornate metal lamp hanging from the end of a tall wooden staff. It's large, weathered from use, and despite how improbably far its glow casts — from the land bridge over The River, where The Ferryman is holding their vigil, up the cliffs above and into the subterranean city's many tunnels — it isn't so bright that it can't be comfortably looked at. The Lantern has an unmistakable aura of comfort and safety (maybe because of, or maybe in addition to, the light it casts), no matter how close or far you are from it.

It's only at the very far edges of the glow, where the last bits of light are swallowed by the darkness, that this sense of safety begins to fray. It's here that you can see them, prowling the boundary: wisps of something that you can barely see. Many somethings, in fact.

They can't cross into the light, it seems. All they can do is wait for you to leave it.

— THE SUBTERRANEAN CITY
Maybe you'd rather stay for now, though. There's plenty still to explore within The Lantern's shroud: to start with, the network of tunnels you can see built into the cliffs above The River.

The biggest hurdle is figuring out how to get into the city. You can spy the entrances, marked by dimly glowing torches set into the open mouths of tunnels, but they're so high up! Surely you're not meant to climb?

Well, yes and no. Some investigation reveals a series of wood-plank catwalks leading up to the lowest tunnel entrances, but it's a long climb. If you're feeling impatient (and brave), there's also a system of pulleys, ziplines, and simple rope elevators connecting the higher levels to the lower ones. The ropes have clearly been here a while, but they're probably safe, right? What's the worst that could happen, you die all over again?

(Too soon? We get it.)

There's plenty to see once you reach the city itself, even if there isn't much in way of a population. (Until now, at least!) The lamps and torches lining the walls are packed with the same bioluminescent plantlife that can be found elsewhere in the cavern, so there's no risk of them spontaneously going out. There are signs placed strategically throughout the tunnel system to point you toward major landmarks, using only simple iconography.

The city itself certainly appears lived in, even if it's currently empty; in fact, if you pay close attention to the signage and the decor, there appear to be layers of activity not unlike the rings of a very old tree. Older tapestries covered with newer ones with entirely different patterns; boxes of radically different table trinkets carefully stored in apartment closets, to make room for new ones on a shelf; evidence of the stone market stalls having multiple different usages, many of them apparently in sequence.

Some of those tapestries or trinkets might even be familiar to you, like they came from a culture of your homeworld. Strange, though, since you didn't arrive with anything similar on you. Where could they possibly have come from?

VENTURE IN THE DARK
— THE WRAITHS
The Cavern is big, and The Ferryman's Lantern only reaches so far. If you want to explore, you'll need to brave the darkness— and whatever else might be waiting out there for you.

You'll have some light, at least, even if it isn't much: the luminescent plants grow throughout the cave system, including its winding tunnels and cramped smaller chambers. As for whatever else might be lurking out there, well... without The Lantern, there's not much you can do to keep them at bay.

The Ferryman calls them "wraiths", if you were curious enough to ask beforehand. They're more what you might typically expect from the idea of a ghost: pale and insubstantial, like mist struggling to take and keep a shape.

And they certainly do have shapes; those shapes are just incomplete, sometimes blurry, like a pencil drawing that has smudged and faded over time. They have faces that seem to have been stretched too long or too wide; they have eyes with no color, unblinking, always staring back; some of them have mouths that never close, while others have no mouths at all; some of them have hands with wispy tendrils of grasping fingers; others' limbs seem to have lost their shape entirely.

There are dozens of them lingering just outside the boundary of The Lantern, and many more roaming throughout The Cavern. They do not speak, or otherwise make any sounds at all. They do not swarm, either, even when one of The Ferryman's souls crosses the boundary. They simply watch, and, seemingly at random, some will choose to follow you anywhere you go throughout The Cavern.

Annoying, maybe. Creepy, certainly. But that seems to be all. Just remember: The Lantern is the only thing that keeps the wraiths at bay. They can't hurt you, out in the darkness, but they will notice you, they will follow you, and they will remember you.

If your exploration takes you to the catacombs, you may find that your wraith shadows get lost just as easily as you in the tunnel system. Perhaps they get distracted? Or maybe they have some curiosity about the tunnels that outweighs their curiosity about you? Either way, it's possible to lose them for some amount of time there— but the wraiths aren't bound by petty things like physics the way you are. They will find you again eventually, either by floating through some wall, appearing at the dead-end of a tunnel, or even just waiting at the entrance for you to emerge again.

If, on the other hand, you find yourself stumbling upon the whispering pools, you'll discover that wraiths gather in droves there, circling the pools, sometimes trying in vain to press their faces to the water. The wraiths that followed you here seem to be the only exception; whatever the pools are saying, it's apparently not interesting enough to draw them away from you.

Aren't you lucky?

( Basil remembers the night before -- the moonlight reflecting from the garden shears, Aubrey's voice coming from the doorway asking for forgiveness. By then, it was too late. He had already made his decision. He was tired. With his Grandmother gone and Sunny leaving, he knew he'd truly be alone. Basil would be trapped in Faraway with nothing but his memories at this point.

When he had found himself in the cavern, he feels like it must be a bad dream. Perhaps someone had found him before he had succeeded. Maybe in reality, he never attempted to try to end things. Maybe this was the afterlife.

But, all of those thoughts are forgotten as soon as he catches sight of his friend.

When he finds Sunny in the Cavern, he barely catches him pushing himself to the surface. It feels like instinct when he makes his way to him, quickly leaning down to help him in whatever way he can. )

Sunny! Sunny, are you okay?!

Here We Go! (CW: almost drowning, thoughts of suicide, panic attack)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2024-11-09 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
(Making it to the surface had been difficult. The only thing that drove him was to escape the throbbing pain in his eye, the half-blindness so disorienting that Sunny didn’t know if he was moving down or up. Miraculously, his head broke through the surface of the River, his hand reaching for whoever had extended their help without a second thought.

Maybe he did have some form of survival instincts left. Maybe it was his sister’s voice ringing in his ears, asking him if he was still there. Maybe it was the familiar figure that had reached out to him.

As soon as Sunny’s hand clasped Basil’s, he froze.

Single eye widening in shock, though his hand didn’t let go.

Everything is going to be okay.

Panic shot through him, colder than the River. His breaths were shallow from more than exertion, vision darkening around the edges, framed solely on the other boy.

Still, he didn’t let go.)

( Basil barely catches sight of that injury, concern mixing with confusion and shock. He doesn't allow that to slow him down, hurriedly pulling Sunny upwards and helping him out of the water.

He doesn't let go of that hand, even as panic fills him - even as he wants to desperately grip Sunny and keep him close. )

I've got you... I-It's okay.

( It's an attempt to reassure him, to help calm him down. Even in the dark, he knows that Sunny is panicking. )

CW: thoughts of suicide, panic attack, missing an eye (My brain - how fast can this escalate? ^^;)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2024-11-12 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[The water was now a distant memory - a far away place of refuge? - except for the droplets that still soaked through his clothes. Vaguely, Sunny recognized that he had sat down, legs underneath him and unable to hold strength, as his brain tried to process.

He didn’t want to be here. He wanted to be anywhere but here.

Where was here, even? Water, a cavern, definitely not the house they had both been in mere moments (hours, days?) ago.

Sunny tried to breathe. Tried, failed, lungs extending and clenching, like water was still in them. Like something was gripping inside him, holding tight, even here. All he managed were several silent gasps, shallow pants as his limbs trembled.

Basil was here. Basil was here. It was ok. Was it going to be? All Sunny could think was that he somehow failed - had failed them both and now not even blissful darkness had been his reward punishment.

Except… his vision was half dark. Frantically, he brought his hands up to cover it, that hole, that wound that surely Basil would panic over. That Basil had caused. His thoughts a jumbled mess.

Help. Go away. Help. LEAVE ME. HELP.]

( oh no, sunny ;; (you play him wonderfully btw) )

[personal profile] photographists 2024-11-12 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
( Basil don’t know where he would have gotten that injury. But, that’s not his focus. Seeing him hurt, seeing him panic as he is now is what his focus on. He reaches for a free hand, gently taking it into his and squeezing it in reassurance. )

It’s okay, Sunny — it’s okay— I’m here….

( Any wish to hide or run away is immediately replaced with a need to help Sunny, just as it always was. He has to be calm, he has to, for his friend’s sake.

Despite that, the corner of his eyes sting with tears and his hands are shaking. It can’t be helped. His heart is beating his chest and his mind if flooded with too many thoughts at once. )

Come on, he have to find help… We can’t just leave your eye like that.
solitarynote: (Sitting Alone/Sad)

CW: blood (Thank you ;; <3 I love your Basil always!)

[One hand covering his eye, the other latching onto Basil’s own grip.

He wanted to let go. He wanted to push away. He wanted… some sort of support, but it wasn’t right for him to accept that, was it?

The only reason they were in this situation was because of Sunny. It was his fault. Again.

So as much as he was frightened, as much as the words Basil spoke only sent him back to that fight, that night four years ago…

Sunny nodded. Leaned forward, till his forehead was resting against Basil’s shoulder, bloodied hand moving from his injured eye to grip the ground. He allowed himself to breathe.

Even if the support that he was so clinging to was his friend. Even if all he was doing was relying on Basil again, forcing the other to shoulder his burden…

Those thoughts spurned movement into his legs. Automatic, standing like a newborn foal, legs wobbly and leaning on the other boy, but… he stood. Remained standing. Right, they needed to find… something. And as he allowed his friend to support his walk away from the River, a bloodied handprint was left behind.

HELP.]
photographists: (pic#17401042)

(aaaa thank you!)

[personal profile] photographists 2024-11-15 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
( Sunny begins to move, and Basil does the same. Almost instantly, he moves to catch him should he fall -- gently wrapping an arm around Sunny. He wants to help keep him steady. )

I've got you.

( It's okay if Sunny relies on him. Basil wants to do what he can to help him. If he's dependable like this, even during a nightmare, maybe that means that Sunny won't leave. Maybe that means that when he wakes up, he'll find a way to really show that he can help. )

Can you walk...?
solitarynote: (Surprise)

(Basil T.T)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2024-11-15 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
(It really was a good thing Basil was helping keep him steady - his legs probably would have given out several times over their slow trip across the rocky terrain. Blood loss really was making him woozy, and the teen couldn’t tell if his erratic heartbeat was from exertion or Basil’s closeness.

He still wasn’t sure what to think

But… this was Sunny’s fault, right? He hadn’t been able to save either of them so… now what?

No use thinking too far ahead. It would only cause him to panic.

So he nodded, trying to seem strong… even if the exhaustion in his limbs was more apparent with every step. At least he was light? So the other boy didn’t have to drag his deadweight behind.)

time to make it worse

[personal profile] photographists 2024-11-16 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
( He keeps an even pace with Sunny then, keeping attention on the other, but watching where they're going. He eyes don't leave his eye for a moment. )

Sunny... What happened to your eye? Did something happen here...?

( There's so much about this situation that confuses him, but he's concerned mostly about his eye. Sunny seems unhurt beyond that, at least... But, they needed to find a way out, and quickly. )
solitarynote: (Fear/Worry)

/distressed laugh XD

[personal profile] solitarynote 2024-11-17 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh boy. Basil’s question causes Sunny’s heart to skip a beat… and not in a good way.

If it was possible for his heart to hammer any louder… he was pretty sure it would wake the dead. Basil, for sure, would be able to hear it, Sunny knew that.

His sole gaze darted around. For what? An escape? He wasn’t in any condition to run and… wasn’t running away what had gotten him and Basil in this desperate situation in the first place?

But shoot, he was taking too long to answer, even for himself. Basil would know, Basil would tell… nothing good could come of this. His answer sounded hollow to his own ears.]

N-not here…

[Was that good enough? It was an answer, wasn’t it. But… that didn’t really give Basil any context either. The truth bubbled in his chest, panic churned in his stomach.]
photographists: (pic#17354783)

[personal profile] photographists 2024-11-18 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
( Sunny doesn't answer him right away, and Basil understands. The last thing he wants to do is push him to speak before he's ready to do so. Besides, Basil understands his body language enough to where he knows what Sunny is saying without him actually speaking.

He looks scared, hesitant. Gently, Basil squeezes his shoulder in quiet reassurance. They could talk later. Right now, he wants to make sure that he finds a safe place for the both of them.

Not here. So, where? Could it have happened at home? Did someone do this to him...? But, Sunny was someone so gentle, so kind - would would even think to hurt him? )

You don't have to tell me, Sunny... It's okay. It's more important that we find a safe place...

Once we do, we need to find something to stop the bleeding.

[Basil’s words caused instant outward relief. Sunny’s body relaxed and his sole eye was able to glance somewhat at his friend again. No longer avoiding, for a moment, as the subject was averted.

Even if the relief he felt was quickly swallowed by his fear, once again, a hornet’s nest buzzing inside him. But that was fine. So long as Basil didn’t know… then Sunny wouldn’t have to answer.

He could just avoid it for now. Avoid it long enough that, maybe, the why and the how would be nicely painted over… but… that wasn’t right, was it? That was how he had hidden the Truth… and that eventually surfaced again.

Sunny avoided that particular train of thought. He didn’t want to be reminded of the similarities between then and now. Of him leaning on Basil yet again.]

L-light… [His free hand pointed upwards at a raised city. Would he even have the strength to make it up there? He could feel the weakness continue to lay in his bones. Basil would know what he meant. He always did.]

[personal profile] photographists 2024-11-24 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
( Basil doesn't fail to notice that Sunny seems to relax. He's always been able to read how Sunny feels, and it worries him all the more that he doesn't know the truth. Whatever it was, perhaps he could tell him in time, but... they used to be able to tell one another everything. Things have changed so much - the distance between them is something that Basil never wanted.

The light ahead of them is more than enough for him to focus on their destination, blue eyes widening a bit. How would they make it up, though? Could Sunny climb on his own? )

I... I see it...

( Basil bites his lower lip then. He has an idea, but it might be tricky for them to do it with how weak Sunny is... )

Sunny, do you think-- you could climb up if I helped you from down here?
solitarynote: (Fear/Worry)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2024-11-25 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Sunny’s gaze snapped from the suspended city to Basil, eye widening.

Could he make it up? With Basil’s help? Someplace that high…?

Sunny had faced his fear of heights in his dreams… but not here. Would that make a difference? Already, he could feel his hands tremble slightly. But… they didn’t really have a choice, did they? The longer they waited, the less likely it would be that Sunny could do anything at all.

The temptation was there - to just lie down and hope he could find some solace in his dreams. Did the dead dream? Or was that comfort allusive even here?

But Basil was trying. Basil was trying, even though Sunny had failed them both.

His nod was small, but… Sunny could try too. So long as Basil would make it up to the city with him. Did he want that? Or did he want a cliff’s worth of space between them?]

( Basil can see how nervous Sunny is, and it's more than enough for him to feel guilty all over again. He can't let that show, though. He has to be strong for him, he has to... Basil would always do everything he could to protect Sunny, and this was no different.

He squeezes his hand again, offering a smile. )

As long as I'm here, I'll protect you. I promise.

( He looks to their destination. )

I'll be right behind you. We can take our time...
solitarynote: (Fear/Worry)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2024-12-05 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh that promise.

It causes his insides to flip flop, his stomach to do cartwheels, his heart to enter an uneven staccato again…

But Sunny swallows down the Truth of his feelings, giving a shaky nod. Let Basil think his apparent distress is only from the task in front of them… even if he subconsciously took a step away from the other teen.]

( He doesn't understand. Why does he look so scared? )

[Those words… that expression on Basil’s face…

Sunny shook his head, gaze averting to the city again. The climb.

That was preferable. To facing… whatever was between them. The memory was still too raw (the light throb that had started in his head, the trembling that began again in his limbs a stark reminder of that).

But that was too obvious, wasn’t it? Basil would be able to tell. That he was avoiding something…]

Sunny turns towards the rocky surface again, and Basil nearly reaches for him before stopping himself. )

[Basil’s plea stops him again.

Alone? No. Sunny couldn’t go alone, he could never. It was the one thing he had feared above the others, the fact that he would be left by himself, that he would have to face the horrors of what he had done-

That was why he had friends in Headspace, right? So he wouldn’t be… But now they weren’t here. It was just Sunny and Basil. And maybe solitude would have been preferred…]

[Sunny shakes his head back and forth, unable to even whisper. Maybe it was what he couldn’t see - and the fact that the person inadvertently responsible was right behind him.

Face your fears, little brother. He could almost hear her encouragement again, except this time it caused a cold tremor to run through him.

He couldn’t face Basil. He couldn’t face that fear - His friend and their shared burden. All Sunny’s fault

So the teen simply breathed. In and out. In and out. Trying to Calm Down once more. It didn’t have the effect that he wanted - his lungs couldn’t fill fully enough, not like back at his house, but… for now, it would have to do. If he closed his eye, he could almost imagine he was back there.

What irony. A place that he had feared waking up to each morning, if only for the specters and memories that lurked in its shadows, and he now imagined it for some sort of solace? How sickening.
