She can't really hear him, the mud is so dense, but when she feels someone grip back onto her hands, she grips back as hard as she can. Does kicking her legs help? Like she's swimming? Lain isn't quite sure, but she tries anyways. It's certainly better than doing nothing.

Eventually, more of her arms come up from the mud's surface, and then the top of her head. When her arms and head are out she can finally take a moment to gasp for air, even though she doesn't need it anymore, and take a look around her. Lain tries to rub some of the mud off of her face with one hand, unsuccessfully, but enough to at least see.

She doesn't seem scared of the skeleton in front of her, at least. In fact she seems eerily calm about all of this, much more calm than a child should be about being stuck in a river of mud, in fact. Lain then lets go of Papyrus' hands to push her arms down, trying to lift herself up the rest of the way out.

She's mostly successful, but it is a lot of work. Lain has herself out about halfway up to her waist until she gets stuck again and needs another break.
