TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

[She offers him a warm smile.]

I shall. Thank thee, my friend.

[For everything - for supporting her, sincerely sympathising with her, encouraging her, standing by her side. Offering a small bow and stepping back to the entrance, she's ready to leave him for the moment - but not without a reminder:]

Should thou require any kind of help, please do call on me.

[Soo Won returned Nagito's bow with a smile.] I feel the same!

[A lot could be hidden behind a carefree expression but Soo Won chose not to question Nagito's lack of concern. Maybe he was just the optimistic type, for he could be more cunning like Soo Won and likes to be underestimated.

There was something about his name that was familiar.]

Ah! I think Makoto was looking for you!

[Maybe Makoto would scold him less when he returned with Nagito.]
blindluck: (056)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-12 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, is he? [Now Nagito has the dubious grace to look embarrassed.] It seems like I've caused him trouble again. I've told him he shouldn't worry about someone like me, but of course that wouldn't stop someone as kind as Naegi-sama.
urtitan: (Chipper)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-03-12 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, don't worry about it! If I do think of something, I'll let you know.

[The likelihood of her being struck with inspiration for a name fitting enough to override her baseless apprehension is low, but not zero! With that being said, she extends her arms at her sides, indicating the area around them.]

I'd say "Welcome to our oasis", but it isn't the most impressive place to arrive in, is it? But far be it from me to complain. We may not have much here, but we have everything we need.

[The person on the other end of this exchange certainly was more altruistic than Hanako himself. The boy was merely taking advantage of a situation in which he believed he could find enjoyment.

Everyone needed a purpose, even when you were dead. He was sure Papyrus would agree.]

If you haven’t heard of us, I’m not overly surprised! Mostly students and teachers of Kamome Academy know the rumors, so they perpetuate most strongly there.

Basically~ The Seven of us keep the peace between the living and the dead. I’m their Leader!
[Or was.] I’m sure you’ll fit in right well!

[Sunny looked up at the sky, really looked, and then suppressed a shudder. It was beautiful but… another shake of his head. Taking out his notebook, he wrote, hoping it wasn’t too dark for the other to see.]

The dark is scary. So I don’t look out much.

[Which gave Sunny the creeping feeling starting to enclose around him. He scooted a bit closer to Soo Won, reminding himself he wasn’t alone in the dark. It wasn’t a darkness like the Cavern Crossing had been either. He was safe here… at least for the time being.]

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-03-12 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ah, he was glad his meaning got through. If it were up to Sunny, he would sleep 26 hours a day… especially if the nightmares would stay away. Really, death had only enabled his poor waking habits (in that he didn’t have to breathe or eat).]

You don’t like to sleep?
solitarynote: (Pout)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-03-12 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[That was agreeable. If Celehar got to asking the first, then Sunny would have other reasons to talk to the Ferryman. He hoped. They really were kind and patient with the teen, something that wasn’t in short supply with the people here but… still foreign to him.]

OK… [His posture relaxed at the thought. Right, it was neither of their duties, and Sunny wasn’t having anything expected of him either. That was just fine.

Celehar’s cough might have been more of a throat clearing, but when Sunny found himself doing the same, it was the real thing. The air in the desert really was too dry for him.]
cloversandcranes: (Shock)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-03-13 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Makoto blinks at the man before taking in what those words meant. Lunging up into a sitting position, he looks at Celahar in alarm.]

You mean we lost some people?

[What happened? Did some people who didn't join the Ferryman get lost?]
cloversandcranes: (Sad acceptance)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-03-13 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Makoto's smile grows even more at Frieda's words. Having someone treat him as just a regular person is comforting. Especially after talking about what he had gone through.]

Yeah...Only human.

[Makoto follows her gaze towards the sky and lets out a happy sigh, before leaning more into Frieda.]

Yeah...It is.

[After a moment, Makoto gently grips Frieda's hand and says while staring at the stars.]

Thank you for being here, Frieda-san.
cloversandcranes: (It's okay)

Re: (Oh no I’m so sorry Makoto)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-03-13 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Makoto frowns slightly at the reply before he smiled sadly.]

It's okay if you can't, you know. There's nothing wrong with you. I know a lot of people that have a hard time with restraining their anger.

And if you can learn to someday, that's good. But until then, just try to remember to apologize when you can. And talk to people. Even if it's just through writing.

It doesn't have to be me. Just don't keep it all inside. It'll only grow if you let it fester inside you.
cloversandcranes: (Shock)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-03-13 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Makoto quickly follows after, choosing paper this time. Surely Nagito would choose scissors again? But when they finish, he stares unbelieving at the result.]

You chose rock?

[He won? Makoto had terrible luck with games, and usually lost by a landslide. But this...]

Komaeda-kun...

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-03-13 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Part of Makoto wanted to agree with Sunny, even if just to comfort him, but Makoto would never accept that. He knew what it was like to lose his memories. And how even beauitful memories could turn sour later. And even terrible memories could brighten someone's life in another way. Memories were important. Why would he forget his family? A part of him screamed at the wrongness of everything that hole left.]

I don't know about that Sunny-kun. I have bad memories. I have good memories. I don't want to lose any.

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-13 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Twice. That's twice. If this was best two out of three--which maybe it became, when they tried again--even then he would have lost.]

Ah.

[For a few moments, that's it. A quiet noise, a blank expression. Then the giggling starts, bubbling up out of him, as impossible to stop as the tide. It's gone. He's not lucky anymore. He's not talented anymore.

Relief floods through him, enough that he's dizzy with it. And then guilt, because that's not how he should feel, this isn't good, this makes him absolutely useless, even less of a stepping stone than he was, not worthy of his former Super High School Level title. The giggling turns into laughter, but the mania doesn't quite roll him under like he's used to. He tries to cover his mouth and is startled to find his hand coming away wet. He has no idea when he started crying. Somewhere in his wildly churning thoughts he's embarrassed.]

Please don't be so modest on the oasis's behalf! It's way more impressive than the mud.

[The 'River' seems terribly named, from his limited experience, and that dissonance is going to stick with him until he forgets about it too. Not least because of how many extra places there are for mud to get stuck, as a skeleton. The towel he borrowed about it may never recover from the sheer number of dried mud flecks he needed to scrub off...]

And just look at these dwellings. Such unfamiliar designs... And all those, scurrying little creatures.
spaghettimonster: (LISTENING INTENTLY)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-13 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I guess it's hard to be sure. [For one, whether they really need the light, or if it's just the easiest solution to the matter. But also:] If they weren't in our worlds. What if, you can only see them if you're dead?

[Not that he actually wants to imagine having unknowingly gone through life with invisible wispy entities following him around and having inconsistent numbers of eyes, mouths, or fingers at him. As much as he wants attention and praise, that's not exactly the sort of audience he was hoping to cultivate. And yet, standing here with this fresh uneasy chill running down his spine, it's easy to imagine them doing the spooky invisible thing that ghosts do, except with more of the cultural expectations humans seem to have about ghosts.]
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-13 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Nagito considers this.] I suppose I can't prove that one way or the other. It's a little unsettling to imagine that wraiths were crawling around everywhere and we just didn't see them, though!

[Because if that was the case, at least in Nagito's world, they probably really were everywhere.]
spaghettimonster: (THE ARTISTE TURNS HIS BACK ON A BAD PATH)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-13 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
NO, SLEEPING IS TERRIBLE!
IT'S NOT THE WORST THING, BUT,
ALL THAT TIME I COULD SPEND ON OTHER THINGS.
CRAFTING MY ONLINE PERSONA... ARTISTIC CREATIONS... CULINARY PURSUITS...

AND WHO WANTS TO DEAL WITH THE OCCASIONAL TERRIBLE DREAM??
TALK ABOUT A WAY TO GET OFF THE DAY ON THE WRONG FOOT.

[Though, maybe all his life he was missing that foot pepper trick as a way to ward off nightmares. Who knows! He's definitely not planning to do any more sleeping now that it's optional and he has his own death to feature in any hypothetical new nightmares.]
spaghettimonster: (I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT HAPPENED.)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-13 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
It is! I regret imagining it, and even more regret bringing it up. [Another uneasy rattle of bones, and he steps back just far enough to get back into that oddly calming radius. He isn't even looking at it, and yet, there's the change in his feelings. It really is like an emotional sun, calming one's bones regardless of the direction faced - making it easier to get back on the earlier topic.]

So, this 'Ferrymansan' is more of a 'Lanternmansan', holding the light that the 'wraiths' don't go near... And, when they decide to go, it's better to travel with them.
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-13 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if the theory that the wraiths are people who failed to Cross correctly holds up, then they're probably only in the afterlife. [Nagito intends for this to make the skeleton feel better, but it may or may not actually help, considering they're now the ones who have to worry about Crossing correctly.]
cloversandcranes: (I'm here for you.)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-03-13 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Makoto looks up in alarm at the manic laughter, quickly rushing to Nagito's side. He hovers in concern as his mind raced to figure out what to do. Was this despair? Should he be worried?

But when he sees the tears rolling down Nagito's face, any worry about despair falls away and pure concern for his friend rises. Without hesitation, he wraps his arms around Nagito's shaking body and holds him against himself.]

Komaeda-kun...
spaghettimonster: (LOOKS THAT WAY)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-13 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
[The skeleton considers this idea, in the context of his very limited understanding of this upcoming 'Crossing' and the behavior of the wraiths so far.]

...What an incredible unreassurance. I think I like my idea better. Where... Where did this theory come from? [Please don't tell him that the Ferrymansan said something like that. Even this calming light isn't powerful enough for that.]
blindluck: (109)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-13 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
[The laughter stops as abruptly as it started, Makoto throwing a wrench into the gears of Nagito's mind and bringing them all to a halt. The only coherent thought he has is that Makoto is warm. He's still crying, but now everything feels so quiet except for his own hiccuping breaths.

Shyly, uncertainly, he lifts his hands to hang onto Makoto, not quite hugging him, not allowing himself that. Even this much feels like taking liberties.]

My luck is gone. [His voice comes out very nearly tonelessly. Everything feels like it's been turned sideways.]
blindluck: (004)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-13 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, really? [Nothing he says ever comes out right, does it?] The way they follow us, attack us during the Crossings if we aren't with Ferryman-san, and the implication that we could fail the Crossings at all--well, something has to happen if we fail, right?
