TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

[Her eyes are probably just as red from crying as his, but she returns his smile. Exhausted as she feels, they both probably needed this. The desert night, cool yet bright with stars, still provided a veil of darkness for them to hide their tears in.]

Don't be sorry. We're only human, aren't we?

[And there's comfort in that, for her at least - with her curse taken away, she's simply a person again, just like him and the others. She turns her face towards the sky.]

...

This place is beautiful, isn't it?
spaghettimonster: (HOODIES ARE NOT FASHIONABLE)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-10 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose that makes sense... [The skeleton considers this, and the view again.] There is a lot of ground to cover. And if people are playing it safe, staying near the best landmark...
perfecttune: (Happy 2)

[She supposed her question was a bit vague.]

Like... do you have any specific likes or dislikes? Where did you live exactly before coming here? Did you go to school? Have any friends? Any siblings? What did your parents teach you?

[She supposed questions like that is more of what she meant... she really should try to organize a party for everyone to get to know each other better...]
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-10 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wherever we go next might be easier to search. [Not that Nagito has any idea what that place will be like, or when they'll be moving on.]

[Mari had no clue about Arche's discomfort about her message and instead went about relying as usual.]

Hmm... I believe it's a public forum... I haven't found a way to have private messages if that makes sense? More in a way that everyone can see this than not if that makes sense...

workaday: I envy you the peace of mind and self-confidence you have to consider airing one's troubles in the public commons to be no great feat, but on the balance I think that will need to be an in-person affair for me. My private business becoming the public's business will be the swiftest route to discovering if that which is already dead can die further, as I will be slain by the mortification of it.
perfecttune: (Default)

[personal profile] perfecttune 2025-03-10 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I wouldn't say I have the self-confidence to post anything personal about me here. More like, think of this as a way to stay in touch! You can always message me if you feel the need to get something off your chest and we can meet in person!

ourlastadventure: (Default)

[personal profile] ourlastadventure 2025-03-10 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Does this girl not understand information security?

Arche pauses.

Examines that mental statement. And decides that she is in fact the one in the wrong here. What's going to happen? They'll get...jumped? And die again? Literally the worst possible thing happened to get everyone here to begin with. She's being suspicious for no rational reason and to no sane end.

workaday: I see. I confess, I would not mind putting a face to the name.
urtitan: (Family Gathering)

[Did he die in a cavern, then..? His comment on his one not having been barren leaves her puzzled - aren't caverns bare of most life by default? (In retrospect, that makes her realise how redundant her description was, but it was just such a contrast to this bright and lively desert!) In the end, she focuses on what he says about the river.]

It did in the cavern. It was a large expanse of water there, deep and dark.

[She almost shudders at the memory of waking up at its bottom, still feeling like enormous teeth were crushing her body.]

It reduced to a trickle as we followed it here... but the Ferryman said that we'll keep following its course, so it wouldn't surprised me it it began running overground again at some point.

[The uncertainly of where the journey will lead them has her apprehensive. Will they be going underground again, where it's dark and cold? But asking the Ferryman, who is always so vague and elusive, would probably be pointless.]

[personal profile] perfecttune 2025-03-10 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Of course! Give me a bit and I'll send a drawing! We can also meet in person later if you would like.

[Mari set about with her pencil and paper that consisted of her device and set to drawing. It took about 30 minutes and she wasn't completely proud of it but decided to send it anyways so that Arche could recognize her.]

Sorry about the wait! Here is a picture of me. Sorry its not that good.
toilet_bound: (Hmmmm?)

No worries! ^^

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-03-10 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
That’s understandable. [Even Hanako found, at times, that being the Leader of the Seven Wonders could be exhausting. Though there wasn’t much else to fill his days, and it had led him closer to his goal…] Ehehe~ Then what about excitement in death?
spaghettimonster: (WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-10 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Having next to no notion yet of what this 'crossing' entails or what their destinations might be like, the skeleton's face goes pensive.] But then, we might miss all the things the mud has taken... And, maybe, people still down there... What a conundrum.
spaghettimonster: (I HAVE ONLY GOOD FEELINGS ABOUT THIS.)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-10 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Water flowing under all that mud... What a thing to imagine. Hard to believe, and yet, this is an afterlife! The harder a thing is to believe, the more true it might be.

[It wouldn't be fair for unlikely things to never get a chance to happen, so after death is probably the best time for them to show their stuff, he's figuring. It's a reversal framework of thinking that's a little absurd, but also makes it easier to roll with the strange things instead of being bowled over by them, anyway.]

And that's a comforting idea, too... Even if some people gave up swimming up, and let themselves sink, that would just mean they'd fall in the river to be swept away eventually.

[He has a few people he could imagine giving up like that, especially if they live for a while after his demise. He could imagine it, but tries again not to, and scrubs a gloved hand at an eyesocket to wipe away any trace of tears that might have mutinously started appearing while he thought.]

Need laces her fingers together and squeezes them. In many ways it's good to have a seeming of a body, to feel. The pressure of her hands, the ground below her, the moving air, the dimming light all around. Still, once again she feels her true self must be far away.

The annoying thing is that she does like Celehar, and with more than the exasperated affection she has for bullheaded Elspeth. She was honest when she said all that about wanting to be able to work with him. She still does.

It will be harder now that she knows, but it's nothing she hasn't done before. Even Firesong found her not having a face to be profoundly unsettling. He'd tended to hold her bared blade and tilt his hands unconsciously so light rippled across it as she spoke, and that eased his mind a bit.

"It's hard to let go of what was most important. Your sense of duty is admirable, Prelate," Need says with unfeigned, if deliberate, sympathy. She presses her lips together into a faint smile. "You don't think there's light on the other side?"
toilet_bound: (Oshiete Ne~)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-03-10 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh! They don’t know about it? Let Hanako elaborate!]

Ah! Don’t worry - I know all about it! [Mostly from watching students through the bathroom window.] It’s also known as ‘radio calisthenics.’ People used to do them all the time in the early morning, though the school uses them as warm-up for gym class! It’s a bunch of stretching exercises and stuff! There’s a whole routine~

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-03-10 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
[There are several moments of silence in which a message doesn’t come through. Then…]

Isn’t it more fun if you guess? I can let you know if you’re right or wrong! I don’t really want to reveal all my dirty secrets right away~
ourlastadventure: (SIR I SAID TO YOU BRUH)

Oh no.

She's adorable.

There is a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong wait for a reply.

workaday: For health-related reasons my schedule is mysteriously clear. Any time to meet is fine, though I prefer to stay within the light of the lantern. For my health, you understand.
urtitan: (Outdoors)

[You're in luck, Daniil: She and Sunny will end up coming with a list of essentials long enough that the hat may just have to take a backseat!

She's glad that he agrees with her sentiment. If they're doomed to wander like this, she wants him to at least share her marvel at what they see.]

It's the beauty of the world that makes its cruelty bearable, isn't it? In nature as in humanity.

[She's often found that the hardships and blessings of the seasons found their mirror in the duality of mankind.]
urtitan: (Climbing Fences)

The Dunes

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-03-10 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
[As so often, Frieda had been looking out at the dunes from one of the massive rocks near the oasis... but this time, there was a small but solid body present alongside the transparent wraiths - a young girl, for all she could tell. At first, she was in disbelief - but then, this wouldn't be the first new person to appear from the dried-up river since their arrival here.

Too far away for her voice to carry over, she hurried to make her way to the mysterious person on foot. Her simple sandals weren't the most desert-suited footwear, and she had to hold on to her sunhat to not lose it whenever the wind picked up, but eventually, she made it into calling range.]

Excuse me! Can you hear me?

[If the girl didn't notice her, she'd cover the rest of ground between them, too.]
blindluck: (004)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-03-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we only have so much time we can stay. The wraiths get violent once Ferryman-san's light goes away. [Not to mention the compulsion, though that probably isn't very convincing to anyone who hasn't experienced it.]
urtitan: (Moody)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-03-10 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Somehow, hearing this confirmation of a wraith showing human-like behaviour seems to confirm what many of them suspected, and her expression darkens.]

...

Perhaps it hasn't been there as long as the others and still retains some of its humanity.

[Despite the heat of the desert sun, a shiver runs down her spine. She hasn't seen G'raha since before the Crossing, and Need mentioned another person she can't recall seeing at all, someone with a lazy eye... did they get lost in the Darkness? Will that be their fate, too?]

What was its mood like, could you tell? Was it scared of you, or...

[Or trying to decide which part to tear out of you during the Crossing?]
urtitan: (Sullen)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-03-10 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Up until the third generation - Ymir's grandchildren -, it manifested as the power to assume a gigantic, monstrous form and revert back from it at will. Even one such beast provided an incredible advantage in battle. In total, nine such titans, each with a distinct nature, ended up passed down through her bloodline, with the one she first held becoming known as the Founding Titan. That was the one I eventually inherited.

[There's much more to say about the 9 titans and their special abilities, but, more importantly--]

The rest of our race could be turned into so-called pure titans by the Founder at will. That transformation is irreversible, and such titans lose all capability for human thought. They're driven purely by a desire to devour humans, and the only one who could control them was the holder of the Founder... until my ancestor, the one who put an end to our empire and exiled himself and his people, locked that ability away from his successors.
urtitan: (Family Gathering)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-03-10 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
[She shares his lack of true enthusiasm, not least because the necklace that looked like those worn by the priests of the Church of the Walls, found and kept by her for a while, disappeared somewhere on the journey between cavern and desert. The inability to hold on to most things disincentivises the search for more treasures, she feels.]

While thou art right, I may still venture out. I want to do my part, and sitting idle may be harder on my mind.

[Raised as a noble and condemned to inaction by her duty, she may be unused to strenuous exertion, but if nothing else, she spent much time out in nature and was in good health until the end... and it's not like survival is still a concern, now.]
urtitan: (Concerned)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-03-10 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
[She shakes her head - gently, not in admonishment. How should he know?]

The Ferryman fishes up those who can't make it out on their own.

[Looking at him, she simply has to addredd the elephant in the room...]

...

I'm sorry that you arrived in such a state.

[Oh, Sunny likes this person(?). So much so that he wants to give some advice… in cheesy joke form.]

It’s a Desert here, so it’s hot. But the nights can get chili. Pepper your steps.

[Did it make sense? Maybe not, but cheesy jokes existed in Headspace all the time. This one, at least, Sunny didn’t have to speak out loud.]
