TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

"The Ferryman was less than forthcoming as to the ultimate purpose of this alleged journey, and spoke mainly of giving up parts of ourselves, though in no great detail. But..." Arche frowns, and gestures to the wraiths. "Is this not their hereafter as well? If they are people much as we are, how can we in good conscience ignore their plight? But by the same measure...what is there to do?"

[There’s that word… ‘again.’]

I can’t help but feel like you know us, somehow. Since you keep saying that word. [Not that he’s expecting a straightforward answer with that - they are more likely to evade it.] I guess I’m just not used to being seen~

[Maybe the loneliness he attributes to that is solely his. Maybe he’s just fishing for a connection where there isn’t any.] Even if there’s ‘no room’ for loneliness… you really don’t have anyone to share your burden with, do you? And even if you deny that there’s a ‘burden,’ that it’s your duty or you’re used to it… there’s always one…

[He isn’t saying this in a teasing manner, merely some form of understanding.]

Wonderful XD

[Hanako has been dead for quite a while, so the statement doesn’t have the same downing pallor as it might for others… that being said, he isn’t oblivious that a sort of patience should be given while that sinks in. Humans were so fragile, after all.]

Hmm… normally I would say that trying to achieve something in death that you couldn’t in life was… well… probably meaningless, but in this case! We’ve been afforded a unique opportunity!

[And Papyrus is on to something with exercise!]

Have you heard of Radio Taiso???

‘Just a god or guardian spirit’… if only it were that easy.

“Who knows? Where I’m from… people can’t easily change their fates. God wouldn’t forgive that much.” He hums, though the way he says it doesn’t necessarily imply any sort of deeper spiritual significance. He just knew what he did… and what he had been told to do in order to receive forgiveness. Not that any of that mattered now.

Need’s story has him smiling though. “Eh? She sounds like she was quite feisty~” And to hear Need talk about it, Hanako would have wondered if she had cared for the girl, in some way. And, honestly, the rest of the Seven Wonders sometimes bickered like children too - such was the way of spirits and humans.

What makes you say that? I... did not see how he handled the trials of the Crossing.

[Celehar frowns. In his opinion - well, before the Crossing he had thought himself better prepared for it, but he's not so sure he's infallible any more, and he judges an assertion like this to be a similar degree of overconfidence.]

[Shepard thinks for a moment, trying to figure out how to articulate what she saw.]

Most of the wraiths seem to be animalistic, but the one I saw appeared to be thinking - like it was trying to size me up. If it had eyes, I could have looked right into them.

Allynbee's handshake is strong and quick, appropriate for someone from a military background. Taking a slightly more relaxed posture, she continued with her introduction.

"How are you holding up? I know this place has been pretty strange."

It isn't possible for Celehar to be any more washed out given his coloring - except for perhaps his eyes, the blue tinted towards a grey-lavender with the softening light, doing nothing at all to ease the intensity of his stare.

"There are those in my homeland who have no experience of ghouls, as you do not," he says, after a moment of staring her down. "They do not rise as often in the South, and well-tended graves may come to seem an effort unnecessary when no one has seen such. There are all manner of skeptics - until one rises." The pacing has stilled, now, but the coiled wire of tension comes through in his voice as he rasps it.

"A new ghoul is slow and weak. It can only dig up other gravesites around it at first, and clothe itself in rotten flesh. Even this can lead to the rise of other graves - the soil of a cemetery that has brought up one ghoul often brings more." He closes his eyes, licks his dry lips as he thinks of the last ghoul, in Tanvero. "They do not confine themselves to corpses, when they have the strength. They hunt the living. They tear them to shreds, and they wear their flesh in tatters. They become faster, stronger. The last I quelled... it had eaten twice of the living. When I found it, it had begun to hunt us. Had I not found its name, it would have killed three more."

He lets that sit in silence for a moment - Need, he's sure, will understand the why of this tale, but he still needs to say it. "They are not instruments of the Gods, Othalo," he says, tiredly. "And it is my duty to see the living safe from these dangers. I do not accuse your Star-Eyed of our ghouls, but neither might I forget the dangers."

[It sounds entirely fantastical to his ear, even having heard the evidence of battle in the echoes of Frieda's voice during the Crossing, but he has seen the evidence, too, of how strange the Elflands are to those around him. He presses his lips together, listening to the story, as one point stands out to him.]

And, this power of the titans...?

[The question makes her think for a moment. Her vocation was difficult, full of long shots and impossible tasks. But all she did - all she had ever done - was the best she could. She was good at what she did. She was lucky.

Now that it was over, Allynbee could finally admit it: she was tired.
]

I might get bored but I, quite literally, had enough excitement for a lifetime.

[Makoto awe suddenly shifts to concern as he looks at his friend's reaction. He had never seen Nagito so distressed and shocked like this before. It was worrying. Despite his own feelings of Nagito losing his luck, it all fell to the wayside as he hovered anxiously by Nagito's side as he thought of some way to comfort him.]

M-Maybe it was just a fluke! Let's try again!

[She bites her tongue against the question - why did you help me?]

Could someone pay for another? Any possibility of an extenuating circumstance?
cloversandcranes: (It's okay)

[personal profile] cloversandcranes 2025-03-09 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Makoto frowns slightly at the words as he reads them before he replies.]

That's true but I believe you can help with how you show it.
cloversandcranes: (...I'm prepared.)

[Makoto swallows down the bile that rose at the complete wrongness of not having a past he remembers. He still remembers his school life and that day he got the ticket. But his family...]

It's...okay. I'm sure there's a reason I don't remember. Maybe even a good one. Don't be sorry.

There seem to be items left behind amongst the houses again. Those, perhaps, can provide... something.

[So he says, but he doesn't seem enthusiastic about the prospect. He's not used to being without work to do, and it shows.]

They are better suited to exploration that I, admittedly. Thine own experiences must be much the same, with thine responsibilities.

[Makoto let out a sigh of exasperation. He didn't blame this person per say but really? It's not surprising but...]

...I see. What about the sky? Do you see any birds?
spaghettimonster: (THIS WAS A TRIUMPH)

Yes, I'm sure you're right about that! A good shower, or oasis lake bath, could surely only help out here. [A good step to feeling more like himself... whoever 'himself' might be.

...Which is an absurd and melodramatic thought, of course he knows who himself is! The Great -- Skeleton! Almost a member of the Royal Guard, now the even more prestigious Ambassador of monsterkind. Brother of Sans, who everyone knows, friend and sorta mentee of Undyne, friend-of-friend with Doctor Alphys, and her former-majesty Toriel, and Flowey, and Frisk - even with a little surprise murdering at the end there. A very cool and artistic skeleton who knows the importance of self worth and talking yourself up to be the best you that you can be and then some! He knows himself!!! Even with that one little (big) piece missing.... For now. Until he's asked to give up something else...

He shivers, the mud only partially muffling the rattle of the motion, and makes a throat-clearing noise, ready to get a move on away from here and these thoughts.]
A-Anyway! This 'Oasis'... I've never seen one myself, but if I remember right... Those are lakes with trees and plants around, aren't they?
witnessvelama: (10)

[personal profile] witnessvelama 2025-03-09 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[For his part, Celehar doesn't seem dispirited - he has a resting expression that lends itself to the solemn, but it's no worse than usual, unless Sunny is prone to reading into such things.

He doesn't expect a response from Sunny, clearly - it takes him a few extra steps to register.]

Ah - ask them about...?

[Does he look a touch uncomfortable with the idea?]
spaghettimonster: (SPIKES -THEN- FIRE OR...)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-09 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmm... Maybe they're not forthcoming about the ultimate purpose of the journey... But, have they been equally mysterious about those wraiths?" He hadn't asked anything on the topic - it hadn't been a question on his mind when he approached the Ferryman, more focused on his own problems than concern for others he'd barely heard about. Making a little small talk, before broaching the matter of his missing name... But when facing a new and unfamiliar challenge, asking for help from someone who knows more has usually been his best bet.

"They definitely know more than they offer, which... I guess makes sense. If you know lots, you could trap people with social pressure in an unending conversation... Maybe it's better they really only answer what's asked, and only some of it..."

After all, without things like needing to eat or needing to sleep as polite exit points, they really could get trapped in a conversational maze, subject to whatever enthusiasm the speaker chooses... He'll need to practice some polite pause requests, just in case.

"...I admittedly did not ask. There was. A distressing revelation and I've not been back since seeing these other entities." Arche frowns. "...Sir, did you lose something when you came here? Something that's difficult for you to think of as being lost - as if it's absurd that you possessed it in the first place?"
spaghettimonster: (PHONE4)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-09 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
NO, I'M AFRAID I HAVEN'T HEARD OF IT,
YET!!!
BUT I'M HAPPY TO LEARN ABOUT IT NOW.
HOW DOES IT RELATE??

[It assuredly will make a great change of topic away from things like the state of the people he knew and whether he'll ever see any of them again.]
spaghettimonster: (SWEAT SMILE)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-09 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"...Um," the skeleton says, with a chill down his spine and a cool trickle of sweat on his skull. His own magic hasn't been working, so surely there's nobody with mind-reading psychic powers around. Which means, "you too, then? Y-Yes, I... Yes. Something... incredibly absurd to have misplaced. Even after a few days here..."

Shock, he'd thought at first. But conversation, cleaning up, exploring the immediate area, watching a bug intently... None of it had worked. And the Ferryman's comments in response to his questions...

"It isn't meant to be gone. The Ferryman seemed unaware, and unhappy to hear of it."
spaghettimonster: (I...)

always fun to be doing threads based after other in-progress threads, all the handwaving involved :P

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2025-03-09 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Unhappy to hear of it..." That sounds about right. And there's something both reassuring and incredibly disappointing, to hear a similar account from someone else. At least they didn't get wildly different answers. But for the one person around with many answers to not have them all, any other questions they might ask... well.

"Didn't you say, you were wondering, what happened to the wraiths? If they were... missing things." Maybe the difference isn't ghostliness or undeath, but how much was gone that wasn't meant to be gone. A chilling notion.
cloversandcranes: (Sad acceptance)

[After what seems like a eternity of crying, Makoto sobs turn into small whimpers before fading away into silence. Staying silent in Frieda's embrace, he hesitates before slowly drawing away from her arms. It...felt good to let all that out, even if he can still hear the voices telling him it was a mistake. Taking a deep breath, he looks up at Frieda and offers her a weak smile.]

Frieda-san...thank you. I'm feeling better now.

[Taking a deep breath, he wipes away his remaining tears and his smile grows stronger as time goes on.]

...I'm sorry you had to see that.

[He sounds truly sincere at those words, even though he knows that Frieda wouldn't blame him for it. He just...has to stay strong. For everyone. Both alive and dead.]
