TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

[To be fair, Sunny didn’t know that the sandstorm was going to hit at that moment; he guessed it was just fortunate (or unfortunate) timing.

Vaguely, he hoped wherever Mari had gone, she could take shelter. That was a step in the right direction.

The teen sat back down near a pile of blankets, leaving enough comfy space between him and the newcomer. When he received thanks, the tips of his ears flushed in embarrassment and he nodded.

No sleep for Sunny, especially when there was a stranger in the room, so the teen pulled out a notebook, beginning to write in it.

Thomas’ own phone would ding a moment later with the message written.]

The weather here is scary. Sudden changes. It’s safer inside.

True, at least to a point! I don't know that they would prevent us physically if we insisted. [He's not sure if they could, actually. He's not ruling it out, but if nothing else they haven't done anything like that yet.] As for my impression of the wraiths, I would be surprised if they weren't connected to us in some way, considering how they follow us, or attempt to tear people apart during the Crossing. If that means they knew us or were something like us before, that's still a mystery, I suppose.

[But being at risk of turning into wraiths is certainly the kind of unfortunate circumstance he would have to deal with.]

[Mari thinks for a moment before replying.]

Hmm... well according to what I read in my studies, 'its a form of treatment aimed at relieving emotional distress and mental health problems'... but in this case it would more just be us talking about what happened during the Crossing if we wish. Does that make sense?

[She didn't have any said books to reference here so she hoped that the definition she gave made sense.]

Of course! Thank you for being willing to assist! I'll send out a message once I figure out more of the finer point details for the meeting.

[Mari's face brightened and she scooted closer to Sunny, making sure not to directly touch him this time. She gently took the comic from him and opened it to the first page, making sure to hold it so that they could both easily see it.]

Alright! From the beginning then! [She started from the first panel and moved onward from there.] Last time in 'Adventures of Captain Spaceboy', Captain Spaceboy and Rococo left the damaged city behind, wandering until they found themselves in a vast desert. There didn't seem to be other lifeforms in sight and resources were scarce... Wow this one's a little grim huh?
toilet_bound: (Hmmmm?)

Apologies for Hanako, he’s really wanting to get her to think XD

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-19 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Wow, that sounded like a textbook answer if he’d ever heard one! Seems like she paid attention in class, and had a great memory to boot!]

It does!

Still… won’t that be unpleasant? I wasn’t here to ‘cross,’ but it sounds like a lot of potentially bad things happened. You can get hurt then, right? Would anyone really want to talk about that~?
solitarynote: (Sad)

[personal profile] solitarynote 2025-02-19 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[See, Mari! This is why he was scared to read it alone!

Sunny leaned a bit closer to his sister, if only to see the page better (that’s what he told himself. That was why, right? And yet, as their shoulders brushed slightly, Sunny found himself relaxing. Back into that comfortable rhythm he’d felt growing up.)

As the comic continued, Captain Spaceboy and Rococo got separated, leaving the captain to traverse the desert by himself…]

[Thank goodness Yashiro managed to encounter a kind soul! She strained against the sand, moving her other hand to grab the boy's wrist to help anchor herself. She almost slipped, pulling the black-haired teen in with her, but managed to right herself.]

S-sorry... I'm going to try to push myself up ok? [She figured that giving him an advanced warning of what she was going to do might help her have better chances of escaping the muck- and hopefully not bring in other victim as she tried.]

[Ah! A reply! Maybe this person knew how to get out of here... although, from their comment maybe they were lost too?]

A-ah! Yes! Are you lost too?
daikonheroine: (Default)

[personal profile] daikonheroine 2025-02-19 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Umm... Maybe you should try to not get trapped?

[All she could imagine is the toilet stall filled with Mokke trapping Hanako-kun inside...]

There is a lot of them after all...

[She carefully inched closer, hoping she wouldn't have to pull the boy from another pile...]
daikonheroine: (Eh?)

[personal profile] daikonheroine 2025-02-19 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
...eh?

[Yashiro's face quickly became perplexed, her eyes spinning a bit as she hyper focused on the word.]

Dead?

[Everyone? But that didn't make sense... they were still alive right? But Hanako-kun said they were dead... but then how did they die?]

Eh? Eh?! B-b-b-b-but that can't be right! I'm still alive! [Glancing down at herself, her completely solid body, then back up at the boy.]
daikonheroine: (Kimono)

[personal profile] daikonheroine 2025-02-19 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
P-please don't!

[She glanced quickly around the area and Hanako-kun. There wasn't anyone else in sight that might be able to help... Luckily it seemed like her friend recovered rather quickly, causing her to breath a sigh of relief.]

T-thank you... for coming to find me... [Her face lit up in a blush, and she glanced down at the course sand beneath her feet.

…!

[Sunny almost slipped into the River itself as she grabbed onto him. Really, it was sheer desperation to not feel that familiar stabbing in his eye that had him holding on to dear life - err… or the dry ground.

Thankfully she warned him. Sunny nodded, determined… even though it was real Yashiro doing 90% of the work and support. Sunny really wasn’t built for physical exertion like this!]

Trapped~?

[Seems like he wasn’t aware of the potential danger. The next moment, he laughed.]

There are, aren’t there! I figured the best place to get answers was with a large group. They aren’t that talkative though!

[As Yashiro crept closer, a few of the Wraiths turned to look at her, their attention momentarily divided.]

[personal profile] daikonheroine 2025-02-19 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! His name is Black Canyon!

[She leaned over to point out one that kind of looked similar to her precious pet.]

He's small, and shaped kind of like a ball... and has light grey fur and a white stomach... and hit little paws and whiskers are just the cutest! He's only 3 months only so I hope he'll live a long time!

[Yashiro startled then. Here she was gushing about her hamster to a total stranger...]

I'm sorry! I haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Nene Yashiro!

toilet_bound: (Embarrassed)

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-19 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Yashiro’s reaction was exactly as he had expected.

As she looked herself over, stuttering, he could practically see the gears turning in her head.

Sighing, he made his way over to her.]

Ah, that? Spirits are apparently still solid here, and we’re as close to normal as we’re going to get. See? I’m solid too!

[He held out his arm towards her. Normally, light would have been filtering through him, but not here.]

[Hanako was, for once, almost speechless at the look on her face.

After a few moments of hesitation, he gently wrapped his arms around her.]

Naughty assistant~ Whatever am I going to do with you?

[She always got into trouble, but… as long as he could, he would be there to pull her out of it. After all, he…]

Arrival

[personal profile] daikonheroine 2025-02-19 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Why did I think I could find something useful out here...?

[Yashiro sighed and clutched the torn palm frond she had picked up back at the Oasis closer. She had been hoping to find something that might explain her current predicament but so far nothing seemed out of the ordinary... no boundaries, no Wonders, no Yorishiros...

Maybe Hanako-kun has found something out?

She had noticed her friend disappearing more often now that they knew a little bit about the area they were in. Deciding to head back for now, she turned around to leave when suddenly the ground near her feet looked like it was shifting. Warily, she moved closer, peering down at the shifting dirt... and let out a shriek when a hand popped out.]

Eek!!!!!!! No no no no! This isn't happening!

[Tears started to form in the corners of her eyes as she stared down at the hand, waiting for an undead something to pop out like in horror stories. Instinct kicked in when the hand briefly twitched and she swung the palm frond in her hands downwards towards the hand, continuing to smack it as if that might make the object go away.]

Ah... It's ok.

[Mari hadn't expected anyone to come into the room she had been cleaning. When the stranger went to leave she called out, leaning the broom against the wall.]

Wait! It's ok. This one doesn't belong to anyone if that's what you are wondering.

They live about two years, I think. [Though Tanaka's hamsters nearly always make it to at least three, that's not a standard a normal person could keep up with. If this is something Yashiro wants to hear is not something that occurs to him.] I'm Komaeda Nagito.
killshaming: (could be so violent)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-19 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hanako gets him by the lapels of his shirt, and up he goes. Thomas Mulvaney is not a slight man, he's muscular rather than trim, but the surprise of being hauled out of the mud by his shirt keeps him from being dead weight.

Metaphorically. He's literally dead.

But he makes it to the shore of the river onto solid ground, breathing hard, bleary-eyed.
]

Am I in bed? [Thomas is experiencing the effects of the state he died in, thanks to the river, and unfortunately, that state is "sloshed."] What -- what's happening?

[You can't stay in bed all day is something that might make sense to hear, if he's really at home passed out and is dreaming all this up.]
killshaming: (could be so violent)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-19 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[He reaches for his phone in surprise -- he'd seen there was no signal, none of the contacts he had expected to see -- and looks from the message to the boy with the notebook and back again.

Thomas holds the phone up.
]

This message - it's from you?

[A paper-like tablet connected to a network is far from impossible. Thomas doesn't question it. What's more important is how quiet the boy is, like he hasn't used his voice in a long time, and that trips silent alarms in Thomas's mind. That's not exactly an indicator of a normal, healthy childhood. It could be nothing, or it could be a very sensitive subject that shouldn't be brought up upon a first meeting. Either way, the information is filed away, not commented on.

It makes Thomas decide to sit, though, rather than loom over the boy. He takes a seat against one of the walls at a comfortable distance, knees bent, wrists resting on top of them.

He leaves his phone by his side, where he can see it, and keeps his tone gentle.
]

I haven't been here very long, but I've noticed the weather. The shortened days. I'd wondered if it was just my perception of time that was altered. I'm... [how does he put this?] ...not as clear-headed as I could be.

[That's assuming he's not dreaming it all in the bottom of a rocks glass.]
killshaming: (and what fades away)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-19 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Thomas's first impression is, this is not a woman to fuck with.

Unfortunately, what she asks -- he's not willing to answer it. A haunted, hollow look comes into his eyes.

I was watching the tape someone made of the worst thing I've ever done. A secret I've kept for forty years that I knew would destroy everything. I was watching the first ripples in the sand I built a fortress on, knowing it was finally time for it to fall.
]

Drinking, [he says, out loud. Deadpan.] In my home. Alone.

[And there had been the pain in his chest, crawling up to his shoulder, but Thomas had thought that pain had been emotional. Stress. Grief. Dread. He hadn't thought it was...physiological.

Had it been?
]

Hanako being blunt, poor Thomas XD

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-19 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There… we… go~!

[Hanako has a moment to feel somewhat pleased at the progress, until he notices the man is still on the ground. Exhausted, it seems. Strange - the River shouldn’t have taken that much effort, but then again Hanako didn’t know what state the other had died in.

He gives Thomas a few moments of recovery before squatting back down, practically leaning over him.]
What do you think? Is your bed normally as stubborn as this mud? [An innocent question, though stated with that same bright smile.] As for what’s happening… you died~ Welcome to the first step on your journey in the afterlife~!

[Hanako had no tact whatsoever, blunt as he was. Maybe it would knock some sense of clarity into Thomas’s otherwise foggy brain!]
killshaming: (when it's over you're the start)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-19 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, [he says, words slow and careful.] I was told that I'm...no longer alive.

Is that true for everyone? All the others here, we're all...ghosts?

[He waits for a response to that. Would it be better to hear this teenager go, "ha! You got punked! Of course you're still alive!" Or worse? He'd like to know if everyone here is telling the same story.]
