TEST DRIVE #2

TDM #2
Welcome to The Desert, wayward souls.
It's good to see you again.

The TDM is game canon and will be active FEB—APR. For further details about the setting, please reference our current setting page. All the information there is fair game for this TDM.
arrival
— BENEATH THE RIVER ( NEW CHARACTERS ONLY )
CW: claustrophobia, being buried alive

If your journey is starting here, you begin as all others have, and all others will: in The River.

You awake in the dark and the damp, with pressure all around you. In this case, however, it isn't water that surrounds you— but earth. Specifically, it is mud made from the sand of the desert and the standing water of the sparkling white salt flat that The River has become, and it behaves like quicksand. It has you here, and it doesn't want to let go.

You aren't in any direct danger; you may or may not notice that you don't need to breathe down here (or at all). But that may be difficult to appreciate in the moment: immediately on waking, you are seized by what was perhaps your last memory— or, at least, the somatic feeling of it. Panic, terror, pain; or (depending on the circumstances) maybe peace, or relief. It is the moment of your death as told by your body's visceral, emotional response, and it won't stop until you pull yourself out of the mud.

You are close to the surface. Even a bit of lucky thrashing might be enough for you to break through the sludge, and crack the shell of salt above. But The River will not release you easily; it will continue to suck you back down until you are able to fully pry yourself free— or someone else is able to lend you a hand.

— BEYOND THE RIVER ( EXISTING CHARACTERS ONLY )
If you arrived here from the Cavern, you'll find that the cave you came from opens up onto a rocky cliff face, not unlike the one you may have found yourself settled in before The Crossing. From here you can see the sprawl of the Desert ahead of you: the Oasis tucked against the base of the cliffs, the endless dunes, and the wide, white expanse of The River — though it hardly looks like one now.

There is no city to be found among these cliffs, though. They are steep and rocky, with dry, loose sand making finding and keeping traction difficult. There is a narrow, winding path to the Oasis below, but it will take time to hike, and the sun is already hot and oppressive above you.

Theoretically, there's a more direct route... if you're feeling bold. The cliffs are covered in jutting striations (as if, say, carved by a massive river, or maybe a River) that make halfway decent handholds and footholds for anyone hoping to climb their way down instead.

Just don't change your mind too much. If you turn back, you may find that the path behind has become impassable or now leads somewhere else entirely. You don't ever see it happening, but it's almost as if the cliffs are rearranging themselves whenever your back is turned.

shelter from the storm
— THE OASIS
The Oasis, as well as the rest of the surrounding Desert, is bustling with life. (Or do plants and animals have a Journey they need to complete, too?) It's a green, if not lush, patch surrounding a small lake of fresh water, partially shielded by the arms of the cliffs from the winds blowing across the dunes.

There are creatures besides you making their homes here: from small, skittering mammals to circling scavengers. If you look closely, though, you'll find it's a bit of a mishmash, as if an ecosystem appeared rather than developed... and, depending on where you're from, some of it might even be recognizable to you.

Those of you that came from the Cavern might appreciate the return of natural light, though you might be disappointed to discover that day and night don't always arrive at the cadences you might expect them to... In fact, they don't seem to follow any recognizable or even trackable pattern at all. Some noon suns stretch on forever; some sunsets speed run straight into dry, cold night.

If that were all the unpredictability the Desert had to offer, it might be tolerable enough... but the weather proves to be just as erratic. One day is clear and bright, with wide-open skies; the next brings dust clouds and lightning storms rolling in from the dunes. (And when today might be half as long as yesterday, those swings add up.)

Luckily for all of you, there have evidently been others here before you, just like in the Cavern. There is a collection of shelters lining the Oasis, no more than huts designed to keep everyone within as cool as possible. There's less space than there was in the Subterranean City, but that means some things are easier to find... The huts are decorated just like the city was before it, as if in layers with the odd familiar trinket from your home stashed in a drawer or under a mattress.

shifting sands
— THE DUNES
The Ferryman is holding vigil at The River, as they always are. They have positioned themselves (and their Lantern) so that their Light casts over the Oasis— but that aura can only cast so far.

The Lantern's Light might not be quite so obvious here as it was down in the Cavern, drowned out as it is by the desert sun, but you can still feel when you approach the edge of its protection, the way the sense of comfort and safety wanes. Beyond it are the rolling dunes of the Desert, where wraiths gather in great numbers.

Those who have been paying close attention will recognize that these are not the same wraiths you encountered in the Cavern. Or, at least, none of the wraiths you encountered in the Cavern are represented here.

These wraiths are not the violent, wailing beasts encountered by some during The Crossing. They are just the same as the wraiths originally found in the Cavern: silent, insubstantial, and always watching. The ones who have found the Oasis prowl the edge of the boundary; the others wander the dunes as if lost. Or, perhaps, searching.

If you, yourself, wander the dunes, you'll find them at best difficult to navigate— or, at worst, impossible. You may be swallowed by a sand storm, or lose sight of your landmarks when descending into a valley between the dunes. You might find yourself somewhere you never expected to be... Or, you might just need to send a message out to the others for help finding your way home.

[Sunny had been napping when Thomas enters the hut. Mari was out doing… something… and the teen had figured he could catch up on some rest. That knock at the door had him startling awake, like something out of a nightmare, and when someone unfamiliar entered…

Sunny felt his heart pound harder.

But just as soon as the stranger entered, the man looked about to turn around and leave, a muttered apology filling the air.

Several moments of silence followed - during which Sunny debated if he was having a hallucination - before he stood up.

Normally, he wouldn’t bother but… the man had looked almost sick. Lost. Sunny knew he would want someone to provide him a quiet place if he was the same (not that he knew what affliction the other was going through).]

U-um…

[Opening the flap to the door, voice coming out a near whisper. Hopefully he would catch the man before he was too far down the desert sands.]

[Need's come to survey the River with a frown. A salt pan with a quagmire under the layer of white salt - she knows she's seen this kind of thing and is trying to remember more. It's been a long time. "They can swallow a wagon", she knows, but more does not seem to be forthcoming.

She sees the hand break through and swears under her breath. Need is suspicious of the crust being able to hold her not-inconsiderable weight but of course, now that she's seen it she has to do something.]

Hang on.

[what 'something' is, after a quick evaluation of her resources, a sturdy wooden cane she's picked up from one of the houses with a cord noose at the end. He's not too far out. She can put herself on the edge where it hopefully shouldn't be too deep if she breaks through, hook the loop of cord around his wrist, and butt the end of the cane against his palm.]

Here, grab this.
killshaming: (could be so violent)

thank you 🩷

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmff.

[That's not the smooth glass he was looking for.

...who in the world...? Thomas is positive he'd been alone. Was someone here? In his study?

The laptop screen is on. Or, it was. He's lying down. Did he pass out? It seems pretty likely. Is he on the couch? On the floor?

He has to turn the laptop off. There's a stranger here (a child? they soung young. they shouldn't see that. they shouldn't see the photos of the crime scene.) and he has to turn the laptop off.

It's that that primarily motivates Thomas to sit up with an effort that feels herculean. He bursts through the surface, covered in mud and sand, and rasps, hoarse and slurred:
]

Don't look. Don't look at it. Where --

[He starts to look around, still sitting in the mud -- which starts to pull him down again.]

-- where is it. I have to turn it off, you shouldn't see --
toilet_bound: (Teasing)

Oh no, I’m so sorry for him already XD T.T, CW: Suggestive remark

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-18 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Wow, whoever it is under that mud surely sounds out of it. Just as Hanako opens his mouth to let out another teasing retort, the man bursts through the surface like a volcano, caked in mud and dust.]

Woah! [He lets go of the hand, hopping back a step or two just in case… and then watches. The other is… looking for something? Quite frantically, at that.]

Whatever you’re searching for, you probably left it behind. [He leans down again, propping his head against a hand, smiling.] That being said… you seem awfully determined for me not to see! What is it? Were you watching something you aren’t supposed to? Something dirty~?

[It was a joke, but coming from someone who looks no older than thirteen, it’s probably a bad one.]

killshaming: (and what fades away)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's not moving at his fastest. Thomas is pretty much putting one foot in front of the other and hoping he'll end up going in a productive direction, so, he's still within earshot. It's more the opening door that catches his attention than the whisper; he turns to look back.]

Mm? Sorry -- can I...help you?

[His years of being a public figure make Thomas fall back on deeply awkward attempts at politeness. This is usually effortless. Charm and poise are second nature to him. It's just that, usually, when he's this hung over he's alone and doesn't have to be gracious.]
killshaming: (could be so violent)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's instinct, reflex more than anything, that makes Thomas close his hand around the cane. He doesn't put a lot of effort into helping, but if Need pulls hard, Thomas's upper body will break the surface, drawing in a just-as-instinctive gulp of air.

The first hurdle's cleared, but even as he sits up, blinking in the light, bringing his dirt-crusted free hand up to shield his eyes, he starts to sink back into the mud. He's disoriented -- how did he get here? Thomas was in his study, drinking, because there was a video...is he dreaming? Passed out? Abducted?

His reaction time is usually great. But he's usually not drunk. Well -- not this drunk. He stares blearily at the woman on the other end of the cane, fully uncomprehending.

[She does pull! The salt crackles and ruptures under her feet, but not sufficiently to actually drop her in. She swears at the ground and since there's universal translation:]

Horsefucker.

[To the man:]

Come on, hang on to the stick. I'll haul you out.

[The cord around his wrist isn't the heavier rope she'd like to have, but it's not like he can be hurt if she has to pull it tight.]

[Sunny didn’t say anything about the stiff over-politeness. Conversation was hard enough to understand normally… the semi-scripted words almost put him more at ease.

Still… Sunny didn’t so much as need help as he wanted to provide it.]

Um… in… here…

[He tried speaking up a bit more, though it was a marginal improvement - four years of sitting in his room, not using his voice, had left it tenuous.

Turning around, hoping the other would get the message that he could come back inside.]

[Except for certain instances of emotional exhaustion, Nagito has been taking advantage of not needing to sleep. He's working his way through a murder mystery novel (middling, he's certain he's solved it far earlier than the author intended) when someone knocks on the door.

The fact that they knocked at all makes Nagito cross a few options off his list of who it might be. A new, muddy face is a surprise, though.]

Oh, hello! I'm afraid if you want to wash off you'll have to use the lake.
killshaming: (you are the nighttime fear)

no don't, Thomas is a terrible man and deserves (almost) every bad thing that happens to him 😂

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[He stares bleary-eyed at the pre-teen.

It's clear that Thomas is somewhere else. Not where he remembers being. He might have been abducted, drunk, and dumped in the desert -- or he might be seeing things. Dreaming. Delusional.
]

No, [he mutters, in response to the terrible joke.] Definitely not.

[The video was absolutely something he was supposed to watch.

But Thomas can't elaborate further. Won't. Even if he wanted to, it's like his voice is stuck. He sinks further into the river, another couple of inches, and its effect takes hold again. Thomas's eyes widen, redden, like he's been crying and drinking (both are true).
]

I need help, [he mutters, digging in his pocket for his phone, wiping his eyes with the back of his other hand.] Family -- no. No, they'll kill me. [It's very hard to tell from the outside if this is metaphor, hyperbole. It's said with the same amount of emotion Thomas is saying everything else, said as he pulls a 2020s smartphone out of his pocket.]

Aiden. I need Aiden.

[The mud's back up to his chest now. He's losing himself in the memory; he flinches like he's in pain, starts to draw shallow breaths, grips his left shoulder with his right hand, phone pressing into the muddy once-white fabric unused. He's feeling the echo of a heart attack.

Can't believe he needs saving twice in as many minutes. This is not his usual score.
]
killshaming: (you can't choose what stays)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Gray brows furrow, not entirely sure what to make of the invitation. The fact that his head feels full of cotton, absent its usual incisive clarity, does not help. For a moment, Thomas hesitates, more out of confusion than anything else. Why is he being invited back in?

Then, from out of the desert, a strong wind picks up, carrying the smell of a storm with it. Clouds skid over the sun, turning the sky overcast in moments. The weather shifts rapidly, Thomas has learned, and he should probably heed this warning, awkward or not.

He nods.
]

Okay.

[Moving a little faster than he had moved away from the hut, Thomas shuffles back toward Sunny and into the shelter, and not a moment too soon. Thunder cracks overhead, and a wave of dust crashes over the area. Thomas stands still inside the shelter for a moment, a little shocked -- he's traveled more than his share, but a sandstorm is something he's never seen before, and he'd almost been caught in it -- before he recovers, and his gaze returns to the hut's occupant.]

Thank you, [he says, bringing his arms around his shoulders, instinctive self-soothing Thomas is too worn out and shaken up to suppress.]
toilet_bound: (Hmmmm?)

Oh no XD

[personal profile] toilet_bound 2025-02-18 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm~? [Hanako watches as Thomas mumbles to himself, catching vague sketches of what the man is doing. His eyes light up when the other pulls out a phone - though it’s much more advanced than the one he was gifted here, and even moreso than those he had seen students use. Thomas puts it up to his ear, talking into it and…] You know, you’re supposed to type on it. [He’d learned that much.]

[The boy then proceeds to sit by rather nonchalantly as the man starts to sink into the mud again. He lets out a sigh.] Poor soul… begging for help doesn’t get you much here. She’d be mad at me if I do nothing though.

[Reaching out another hand, grabbing onto whatever he can that’s left above the mud and tugging rather insistently.] Come on, now~ You can’t spend all day in bed!
killshaming: (could be so violent)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[The instructions are simple, easy to follow, and they penetrate Thomas's sloshed brain. He's in something, and he needs to be pulled out of it. It feels like mud, like water, and though if he were alone, he'd have a hard time not accepting matters and going under, someone is here and actively trying to help, and following her lead is easier.

His other hand comes around to grip the cane, and between having both hands on it and a dazed half-swim, half-belly-crawl that keeps him from being dead weight, Thomas is pulled free of the river, brought panting and filthy onto solid ground.
]

Aaagh, [he slurs, intelligently.] Jesus christ.

[His clothes are finely made and fit well; it's a real shame about the mud. His eyes are red from drinking and from crying, though they're (relatively) dry at the moment. He looks up at his rescuer with an unfocused gaze.]

I, [he begins,] don't have a clue what's happening here. If this is a dream, I...

[--would really like to wake up now dies on his tongue. No, actually. Reality was worse than this. He doesn't want to go back to it. Thomas's mouth closes, his expression clouding over for a moment before he attempts a recovery.]

...I regret everything I ate last night.

[The humor is halfhearted. He is obviously hammered.]

[He's greeted by a dark-skinned, dark-haired woman in military fatigues who sits bolt upright, reaching for a gun that wasn't there.

Allynbee breathes when she sees the state of the man at the door. He's not a threat. Or if he is, he's dealing with something affecting him.
]

It's fine. Get out of the sun, at least. It looks like it's getting to you.
killshaming: (you can't choose what stays)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh.

[Thomas stares a moment, caught off guard by the matter of fact, useful reply from the boy with the mystery novel.

He should probably go wash off in the lake, then.

...

It begs a follow-up question, though.
]

...is that the only local source of water, then?

[Should he be worried about that?]

Besides the mud in the salt flat that makes me feel like I'm having a heart attack.
blindluck: (002)

[personal profile] blindluck 2025-02-18 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, unless you'd like to take your chances in the dunes. [Theoretically there could be more water out there somewhere...] But you shouldn't have to drink anymore anyway. You just got here, right?

[It doesn't take a detective to figure that out, with all that mud on him.]
killshaming: (I never knew daylight)

[personal profile] killshaming 2025-02-18 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[He winces. Thomas is a proud man under most circumstances, and being this...messy...is usually reserved for when he's safely behind closed doors. He deliberately doesn't wallow -- or deal with the consequences of wallowing -- in public. It's just that the choice has been taken away from him for now -- if any of this is even happening outside his mind.]

Thank you.

[He does step inside, grateful for the cool and the dark.]

I'm sorry if I startled you. I'm... [he hesitates, choosing his words before he goes on.] ...not really myself at the moment.

[It's the best he can do. Going into further detail about why he's so rattled is something he absolutely intends not to do.]

[There's a long pause and you can almost hear her grumbling as well. She tells herself that most of the folks she's met here are kids and save all but one (where was that spiky-haired kid) were civilians.]

Try and see if you can meet up with your friends here.

[A beat.]

For what it's worth I'm sorry you went through that. This place is strange enough without dealing with something that stressful.

[She drags him out a step at a time, setting her jaw with the effort and getting muddy to the ankles in the process. Need's a very tall, broad-shouldered old lady and up to the task if she works at it. It does help that he catches on about not wanting to stay in the muck. And she didn't even have to use the cord!]

I think this is a bit too far out for dreamers. [she says this because in the parts of her canon's afterlife that she's used to, dreamers and priests can go to meet spirits.]

It was at least good, I hope. Your last bread and drink. Drinks?

[Clearly he was the worse for wear even before the coating of mud and salt came into the picture. She isn't sure how well he'll process anything he's told. For the moment, she leans closer to undo the loop she'd put over his wrist, a little tense because she's paranoid and thinks he might fight this.]

[Allynbee has met the type more than once and she lets him lead the conversation> She's proud enough in her own right and while she wouldn't be caught dead - ha - being messy on leave, she also knows the business end of a hangover.]

I don't think any of us here are in the best state.

[There's a quick look of appraisal, blink-and-miss-it quick, and she gestures towards the door.]

Did you get fished out of the mud?
callsignhornet: (Default)

[personal profile] callsignhornet 2025-02-18 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
And what's your impression?

[This conversation reminds her to talk to the Ferryman and get eyes on the rest of the folks present in this...space.]

They're the guardian of this place, looks like. It's bad form to abandon someone you're supposed to keep safe.

Bottle, [he mutters, not fighting the removal of the cord at his wrist. Normally, Thomas is more careful with how he talks, but the last bottle has left him more than a little woozy. Besides, in comparison to the secrets eating away at his heart right now? An admission of how much he drank feels incidental.

But there's something in her tone, the way she says last, that draws Thomas's attention. Ice-blue eyes flick up under gray brows.
]

What do you mean, [he says, slowly,] "last?"

I'm closer to a space soldier, actually.

[She honest to god chuckles. It feels like an age since someone was this excited to talk to her and wasn't too freaked out or pissed off by 'Commander Shepard'.]

Can't say I've met him, but space is a big place. Might have just missed him.

[The last bit draws her attention and brings her focus in tight.]

I'm guessing you aren't talking about the planet. How long were you starbound?

[She straightens up and starts coiling the cord back up as she surveys the man. Need is dark-eyed, gray-haired, with a seamed and scarred face and a heavy build, and a watchful, reserved demeanor.

Wearing just an undyed linen shirt embroidered with spiky flowers, under a loose white headcloth keeping the sun off her head and neck and over a maroon divided skirt that's gathered at the ankles, from their respective angles it's not hard to see that there's a slot-shaped hole in her shirt over a slot-shaped hole in her chest. A clean and bloodless wound through which daylight is visible.]

[A space soldier… Sunny wondered what the difference was. Maybe, instead of running with a crew, she had gone solo?

The fact that Allynbee had responded, and wasn’t laughing at him, allowed his excitement to come out again, if tenatively.]

It is!

[No mention of Captain Spaceboy this time; he’s too embarrassed.]

I was. The planet. He went rogue, and had a lot of muscles. He started a transportation station. It was… a few hours? A few days?

[When it came to his dreams, time was an irrelevant thing, so trying to actually quantify it was confusing.]
